Yeah, I've had more cars with points (which will do the same thing) than not, so that's pretty well ingrained in my brain. I am, however, going with the Igniter II on the Galaxie for that reason. But I'm still not sure if I've got it wired right or not, and if not, where to run that red wire...

It would seem to me that if I spliced the red wire into the ignition wire, it wouldn't really be that much different than them both meeting at the coil. Or would it? At any rate, I ran the check you suggested and got ~10 volts. Battery voltage while running is a little over 12.5 v. So am I running too high of a voltage?
10v at the coil is okay- you're fine.

i will say...after doing a lot of digging, i ran across this:
Letter from Pertronix

i've never seen that before.
the current instructions on the Pertronix website shows the diagram you are referring to (12v to the red wire)- and it makes no distinction about Ignitor I, II, or III.
(instructions here) http://www.pertronix.com/support/man...itor12vneg.pdf

might be worth making a call to Pertronix, especially if you're not sure which unit you have.

Thanks! I pulled off the cap and took a look at it, and it just says Ignitor on it, so I found my receipt and looked up the part number, and it's an Ignitor I. Like I said, I haven't had any problems with it the two months I've had it installed, nothing is getting hot as far as I can tell. It's a confusing diagram, and I wish they would say "For you ford guys with the resistor wire, attach the red wire HERE." (And then show where "here" is, of course...)

Pal, all these guys are dancing around a simple question. Your question is: how much resistance should there be between the ignition switch and the top of the coil?
If you insist on running ancient points, go ahead. Someone on this link should be able to tell you how to get a resistor from Radio Shack of the proper ohmage and wattage which you can bolt to the firewall with proper grounding after you strip out the rotted wiring from the swamping resistor that Ford put in forty-five years ago.
My advice is to go modern.

No, I've dealt with points enough over the years. This setup is working fine in my truck. I just want to make sure when I switch my Galaxie over I get it right.
