There are a couple of ways to reduce this clerance. Thicker steels is one way. no machine work required.
Add another friction and steel to the pack. Adding more material to the pack will require machine work.
Either way getting the clerence reduced to .20"-.40" makes a huge differance in the delay.

Ok, so I am going to plan on a full rebuild this winter. In the mean time, as the plates wear will the operating temp begin to increase? Would a temp gauge be a good idea to prevent severe damage?
Also has anyone ever intake a light/indicator for the converter to let you know when lockup has occurred? The machine I'm in today has one and I'd like one on my e40d.

a trans temp gauge is always a good idea.
you can't miss when lockup occurs.it happens right after your 2nd shift felt/3rd gear (2nd going into 3rd gear) by approx 5 more mph latter,roughly 35mph.
the semi shift you feel before OD is the lockup (direct connection of engine and trans.) you can't miss it.

you might want to think about having the light turn on when it's unlocked since she's locked up much more than unlocked.an almost always on light,might get a bit old after a day or two.
....
iv always had instant reverse with my truck too.though it only had 47k miles when i bought it,so kind of expected i guess.just 85k now.not much has worn out in there yet.let's hope for another 100k anyway.

With mine being a 3:55 gearing would the converter lock up in a diff place? Because I feel that shift in between 2nd and 3rd, around 35mph

The better shops will fix the problem if it exists or not. It's one of those " aint broke, fix it anyways" deals.

the converter doesn't lock until the transmission is in 3rd gear.
next time you head out,remember this: when you place the trans in D,your already in first gear.so the first shift you feel,is 2nd gear.the next shift you feel,will be 2 to 3.this is right around 30ish if you take off easy.next,you'll notice the lockup around 35mph.lastly,you'll feel 4th around 40-45mphish when driving easy/empty.
another easy way to tell that the trans was in 3rd when the converter locked up,is because there is only one shift after that happens.-the trans going into OD.
side note;
with the turbo install,i notice the TPS is sending info to the trans saying "hey we no longer need toque multiplication,you can go ahead and lock the converter now" - like always.but it's happening 1-2 mph sooner now!around 33-34mph instead of a solid 35mph like when it was n/a. cool beans hey? - fuel economy gain/converter no longer working so hard with increased engine power available (though the lockup clutch works harder,and i should upgrade to the triple disc billet.always something lol.) .
