Are you Governed by a Speed Limiter?

I want to know how many of you are governed by a speed limiter. I'm obviously the only one in the country crazy enough to build up a 14' Box Van so nobody can continuously cut me off while driving on the freeway. But I am limited to 80mph. Thats it. As soon as my power house slings me up to 80 in what feels like 10 seconds. The fun is over, the pedal is dead and I cannot go any faster. This is besides the fact that big box vans shouldn't be flying down the freeway at 100 mph. I'm just curious if your trucks have limiters too?

No. I have the speed limiter removed in all my custom tunes, as well as my "stock" tune.

In stock configuration, yes, there is a speed limiter. But when you get a custom tune that limiter is usually removed unless you say otherwise. Before i got my DP, all i could do was about 92ish mph, would get there just fine but hit a wall. Got the tuner and i havent found where it stops at, keep getting the pucker factor going at about 110 or so and shut down. Put it back in stock tune and the limit is again about 92 or so.

All stock trucks have a speed limiter. It isn't there just for the fun of engineering it, there is one or more reasons that it is set where it is.

This video shows what happened to a V6 Mustang where someone removed the speed limiter without improving the driveshaft. If you remove the limiter I recommend that you know EVERYTHING that went into the decision to set the limiter where it was and upgrade those parts to handle the higher speeds.

Mark that vid has certainly made the rounds hasn't it? Why did the guy buy a V6 if he's into going that fast...

OP- I think my limited is now 255 MPH but I haven't been able to test it yet.

Dont know, dont want to find out. I drive a nearly 4 ton truck. If I am going 80mph I am going too fast. Thats just me, but I dont live on a salt flat either.

The speedometer on the X only goes to 100. After that it drops to zero. That was plenty fast....

For the same reason someone would buy a truck and want to go faster than the speed limiter allows....

I also dont think a E rated tire will take much 100+mph driving.

Ever since I bought a Honda VFR800 a while back I am constantly asked how fast it goes. My answer is always the same "the speed limit"...

Both of my F-250 pickup trucks are governed around 92-94 mph or so.
My F-450 most likely has a speed limiter as well but I've never found out what that number is. I had it up to 90 mph and then I backed down (I was testing the Centramatic balancing disks...) .

Talking with some of our field techs.....they think the early Super Duty F-450/550 trucks were not speed limited but I suspect the stock programming does have a limiter around the same 90 mph area. However, since those trucks all have 4.88 gears (7.3 liter), the RPM limiter would come into play before the speed limiter would. I was able to get my 2000 F450 up to 90 mph because the stock 4.88 gear has been replaced with 4.30 ratio...

Our later year Super Duty trucks do have a speed limiter around the 78 mph range. I presume Ford made this change due to the fact that 19.5" tires aren't rated for speed above 75 mph.
