replaced ignition key lock still no joy

HAve been having to start the truck from the starter relay till I could get to replacing the key lock. Here is how it goes. Stock key rotates and still unlocks the steering wheel but will not move the actuating rod to the ignition switch. Push the rod down a little and then jump the starter relay and it starts. Pull back a tiny bit on the ignition switch rod and it turns off. So I replaced the key lock with a new one, 1 minute job, and nothing has changed. The actuating rod still does not move by turning the key. Whats next. Looked for the books but there are not any in town for the 86 F-250 6.9. Steering wheel is the two part non tilt with a shroud. Shroud removed

sounds like the actuator rod is either not connected to the cylinder or is completely out of adjustment.

No matter how I move the rod and re-install the key lock it does not move when the key is turned. taking a pair of needle nose and shoving the rod down dose not start the truck either. I could make an assumption that the switch may be bad but why wont the rod move with the key

You say turning the key won't move the rod down far enough, I would take the steering wheel off and see if Part 14 in the diagram (from Franklin2) is broken:

It has been said this piece is just pot metal and frequently breaks, especially when people grab hold of the steering wheel to try and hoist themselves into the truck.

Thanks for the IPB. Lucky number 14 wont move at all with the key. I'll see if I can get to it tomorrow. Still have my garage to empty out since we moved. I can get to it before it gets dark tomorrow I think. If it is broken, the old pulling people into the truck finally got to it. This probably isn't a part that is carried at your local napa is it. LOL

My understanding is that Ford dealers still have it, just go to the Parts Dept. and ask for the famous pot-metal piece of the ignition linkage that always breaks.

But, verify this is your problem, first. If you don't have tilt wheel, that might not be your problem....

Do you happen to have the list of names for these parts? I'm trying to find #11, but can't seem to even figure out what's it's called.

I believe they used to call the "shift collar" or something to that nature.

The parts catalog calls it a Steering Column Tube Flange. They're different depending on year & transmission.

Thanks, The original owner lost the key and my tow guy mangles the ignition lock hole trying to bust the lock out. So I've been trying to figure out how to
A: remove the dam thing (The wiring doesn't seem to be long enough to pull the switch out all the way.)
B: find a new one.

See if this helps:

(That's to remove the key tumbler.)

If you're wanting to remove that flange, you need to disassemble the steering column....

I had to replace the key lock, but did not have the key. I had to drill it out, and then it came out with no problem. Put the new one and works like it should.
