No Oil Pressure after Distributor Swap

No Oil Pressure after Distributor Swap
Need some help here guys. Just swapped to a DUI distributor and new carb setup. While tuning I noticed a tapping. By the time I achieved the correct timing to rule out ignition knock the tapping was very noticeable. I've changed the oil since then and it looks fine. Pulled the valve covers and number 6 looks just about bone dry with the rest not far behind. There was some sludge present. I then put an aftermarket oil pressure gauge and it's reading zero, also the new oil filter is not filled after sufficient run time. So the question is; is there a way to mess up the distributor installation to cause no oil pressure? I followed all the instructions and everything went together well. Or do you think this sludge could have clogged the oil pump and by chance happened at this time?
Any help is appreciated.

The oil pump is driven by the distributor. There is a hex shaft that connects the bottom of the distributor shaft to the oil pump. This shaft slips into the end of the distributor shaft, and is only held in place by the friction of a small metal spring ring. It is not uncommon for the shaft to fall out into the oil pan when removing/installing the distributor. Most parts stores have them and they are not expensive. If your old one fell into the pan, most people just leave them there without harm.
