1965 Ford F100 Repair of gauges

Hey Fellas
I'm going to buy a 1965 Ford F100 that has a few bad gauges. Is it difficult to repair the gauges on the dash? Thanks for the information. Adios.

Seldom do the gauges themselves go bad. How do you know the gauges are in fact bad? It could be the sending units or wiring.

If in fact they are bad there are plenty of NOS ones out there.
I have also repaired and restored the gauges with great luck . . .

Simple test is take wire from sender and hold it to ground with key on. That should peg the gauge. If the gauge then works its the sender thats bad or a mechanical issue.

If the dash fuel gauge is reading improperly, it might be the gauge, but usually it's the float on the fuel tanks sending unit.

The float is made from two pieces of copper soldered together. Solder breaks down, gas seeps in, float settles to the bottom of the tank.

COAZ-9202-B .. Fuel Sending Unit Float / Available from Ford.

Applications: ALL 1957/79 FoMoCo Passenger Cars/Trucks / 1961/79 Econolines / 1966/79 Bronco's.

I made no mention of the replacing the sending unit, because the problem is usually caused by the sending units float.

The float is available by itself, see post 3 > > COAZ-9202-B < <

Flip the seat forward, look at the top of the in-cab fuel tank. Top of sending unit is plainly visable, it's round, uses 5 bolts to attach it to tank.

Remove 5 bolts, unfasten electrical wire, remove sending unit from tank. The sending unit's float is attached to the sending units 'shepherds crook' shaped arm.

Remove float from arm, shake it...hear any gas sloshing around inside it? If so, it's time for a new float.

Very easy to remove. The contacts in mine were rusty.

You mentioned several gauges were not working.

Exactly which gauges do not work?

My Ranger gauge is wacked out right now too. Filled up a couple days ago then next morning it was under a 1/4 tank.... 3/4 of a tank in 3.62 miles.

I need to check it out to see whats up. So simple but no time. I like it that way as if my daughter jumps in and the gauge shows under a 1/4 she will take her own car.. saves me money not working right!

C4RZ-9030-C .. Accessory Locking Gas Cap w/2 keys / Vented / Use w/In-Cab Fuel Tank (Rotunda/Auto-Lite/Motorcraft FC-91) / Obsolete

1961/66 F100/1100 & 1967/72 F100/750 (except 1970/72 F100/250 with Evap/Em).

ANTIQUE AUTO SUPPLY in Arlington TX has 1 = 817-275-2381.

WESLEY OBSOLETE PARTS in Liberty KY has 1 = 606-787-5293.

CARPENTER NOS OBSOLETE PARTS in Concord NC has 23 = 800-476-9653.

All these trucks are very EZ to siphon gas from. A gallon of 87 octane regular is fast approaching 5 bucks a gallon.

And 89 and 91 octane are now both over 5 bucks a gallon here in LA LA Land.

Yesterday, an idiot in a Cattle-Hack Escalade passed me doin' at least 80 MPH while both of us were climbin' steep Colima Rd. in Whittier.

When I pulled into the Shell station at the bottom of Colima Rd. in Hacienda Heights, there was the idiot filling his tank.

When I asked him what his hurry was, he said he was running out of gasoline! What an idiot!

LOL! Actually what happened is the gauge read different in the morning. As it does each time I drive it. Pulled the cap off and looked and it was still full.

The fun thing is the more I drive it during the day the higher the gauge goes!

Start off in morning and I have 1/8 of a tank, then about the 3rd start @ noon I have a bit over 1/2 tank. By dinner and the 5 or 6th trip it shows 3/4 tank.

Its like getting FREE gas, thats why I drive the truck so much . . .

I have a NOS fuel sender but I like it how it is just fine.

Actually it just acts up when the tank is full. A bad spot on sender. Once the tank gets below 1/2 it reads correctly.

I just ordered my float. It was just as you said fuel in the float making it sink. I metered out the rest of the assembly and all is well. You saved me about $40. thanks ND..
