I say you are LUCKY. You had your chain jump and didn't get an interference call from the referee. Yep lucky . . .

Good Luck or Bad Luck??????

The duck tape thing was a side of the road fix that actually did a decent job keeping the oil inside the engine. Obviously I replace the valve cover when putting the engine back together.

So the question remains. What causes the chain guides to break on these engines?

Any takers?

cam phaser lockout

I have been chasing this one I have 60 psi oil pressure we have out new vct sensors in, new chains guides, crank sprocket ,tensioners, plugs. The truck starts good, but you never know when it will start the missing and no power. What do I check next and do you think the cam phase lockouts will help. I lock my 4 door 4x4 short bed lariat but it would be helpful if it was not a fixture in my garage

Cam phaser ticking

Has anyone ever been able to get rid of the ticking without replacing parts such as using fully synthetic oil or some form of oil treatment? Sure hate to put $thousands into an 07 with 115,000 miles

after reading dozens of threads on this problem, just decided if its not really hurting anything, to just ignore it, it does get better for about a month after I change oil & filter,,,150,000 and running great (just ticks)

My 06 F-150 64000 mi started making the same noise last week, Now I know what the problem is. Never had a 5.4 apart so this was very helpful. Thanks for the pictures and discription of the problem.

Update time again. Its been about 5 months since I had to replace the timing guides and tensioner because of their failure, and all is well with my 3V. I actually helped a friend with his engine noise issues and his plastic tensioners show signs of leaking around the gasket too. I recommend to everyone who ever gets this deep into their cam timing to replace the junk plastic tensiondrs with iron (1998 or so f150). With thephaxers locked and tensioners working, I promise my 5.4 is the quietest 3v you've eved heared.
