TTB or STRAIGHT AXLE: TTB OR NOT TTB

O.K. Here's the deal. I have a chance to buy the front half of a frame from a 79 F150/bronco that has the coil sprung solid axle assembly for what I think is dirt cheap.

Now the reason, I have a 94 F-150, TTB tire wearing pile, 5" total suspension lift, 5.8, E4OD, F-350 rear leafs and was wondering if I am crazy enough to dare to swap.

The delema, is this possible? What front coils will I need to match the lift or will the lift coils work? I realize that some like the TTB ride, but my god it is a truck. Can I use F-250 coils to raise my carry capacity? if so what would I purchase to match my lift so far?

Am I nuts or is this a great idea? It would be a permanent fix for the alignment! Besides it would look trick to anyone who knows.

Thanks for any input, critiques, support, brow beating and etc.,
Jim

P.S. If this has been discussed in a prior thread, I appoligize! I spent about an hour searching threads with little help found.

TTB or STRAIGHT AXLE: TTB OR NOT TTB

here's on for ya. i got tired of trashing the 2.5" lift coils on my ttb bronco, so i borrowed coils from a junked '75 f-250 4x2. the coils give about 4+ inches lift over stock and mount up exactly the same as 4x4 coils, and are rated for more weight. they still flex well enough for wheelin articulation purposes. i run 2.5" lift brackets for ttb axle housing and camber/caster adjustable bushings in upper ball joints for alignment and spec out good enough for wheelin. i'm thinking of removing the lift brackets from the ttb halves and welding/fixing the halves together to give a solid axle effect. does this work, has anyone tried this? should work, be easier on the short shaft u-joint.

thanks to all that responded. I did notice the Tech article on this after I posted. thanks Daren Woods!

78: If you have the time I would like that list. What were your major hurdles? how did this match up with your existing lift? How has the longevity and alignment been? I can get the entire front assembly including the upper spring mounts if necessary. what tire size do you have installed? Finally, are the bolt patterns the same?

Hey 78f350, was it really that easy? I always thought it wouldn't be that bad of a job. What, if any, parts did you need to buy or make? I'm right here in Chicopee. I think I've seen that truck up in the meadows.

Hey guys, I just posted the TTB swap list in the offroad forum. So far in 3 years no problems, truck drives like a 79. No wacky tire wear.

The swap is simple, tho some of the parts need to be custom, you will need atleast 4" coils to clear the engine xmember with major trimming, 6" with minor trimming. Tracbar bracket needs to be custom fabricated and welded to the frame and supported to the engine xmember. the 79 radius arm brakets need to be reworked with the face pushed back 21 degres.
