Yep, same trans except for bigger syncros and some different gears. The 47's were only used in '96 and '97 models. Everything before that had 42's. You can look on the info plate on the side of the trans and see if it's a 42 or 47, made in USA or Germany, ratios and build date.

The 42's are good strong trans. There's nothing wrong with them, but the 47 would be an upgrade if you wanted one.

I just rebuild a zf5 47, not too hard. the gear holding jig would be nice but not needed. I ordered the rebuild kit from ebay, FORD]FORD TRUCK ZF 5SP S5-47 REBUILD KIT '95+ OE w/SYNCHROS | eBay good complete kit. (hope the link works)

I also bought the 3rd gear bearing sleeve from drivetrain.com, they are good. The only thing i didnt get was the small parts kit which gives you new snap rings and shims(i reused the same shims and just bought snap rings in town). just make sure you have a torch and a good puller. I guess I didnt totally 'rebuild' it, just freshened it up with new bearings and syncros.

Haven't used them, but lots of positive info on FTE about these guys. Midwest Transmission Center $1500 for a -47

Actually, I have used them now that I think about it. The short throw shifter in my ZF-6 is from midwest.

So '95 model trucks had S5-47s in them too? I thought it was just '96 and '97. They might be going by the trans build date maybe.

Yea I thought it was only 96 and 97, but the kit says 95 up, they could be wrong tho.

I'm putting the defibulators on this thread. I have a ranger build started on my ranger. But I also have my 96 F250 with the ZF5-47 in it. I bought nearly two years ago. It had absolutely no slave cylinder on it. I put a new one on and off I went. The trans was never too good from the start. The last guy wasn't much of a stick driver and so the third synchro and 1st are jacked up. But since I know how to drive well, I have kept the trans alive. I work at a company that sells clutch kits and the like. So I picked up a LUK clutch kit for 60 bucks. Now I am getting ready to order a new shafts and sychros. This transmission is finally done. Lol. I've been reading over a lot of posts and it seems 50/50 on whether you need the jig or not.

I think I may get a jig anyway seeing as my ranger build is receiving a ZF6...so ZF's will be full in my future. Lol. I am curious as to where I could find this jig at? As well as any upgrade suggestions? Thanks!

When I swapped the broken case on the tranny from the 97, I got the ZF tools off EBay. A seller by the name of Black Hat Auctions usually has a lot of Ford Rotunda branded tools. By the sounds of it , they go to a lot of Ford dealer liquidations. I don't remember what the numbers of the tool kits were that got, but all the tools for the ZF trannys don't come in one kit. While I just put a bearing kit in the tranny, I wouldn't have had to have the tool kit to do the job.

A jig is not necessary to rebuild these. I've done a couple with out it although it is a whole lot easier with it.

And why would a new shaft be necessary? If the old one is not scarred, or scored, then just polish the shaft. I mean, that's what they do with cranks.

I will probably see what I can do without the jig toolset. Doesn't sound like it would be too hard to do if you know what you are doing.

As for the shaft, guess that was more for the Ranger's ZF6 its getting, need that to be in tip top shop for racing. I will most likely just polish the shafts in the trans for the F250.
