302 question

What can i do to build my 302 to get at least 300hp and 15mpg? I was told
gt40 heads (will my stock intake still fit with those heads)
cold air intake
throttle body spacer
under drive pulleys
long tube headers
flowmasters 40 sersis
very mild cam
I plan getting a new short block and building on that. Any help will be appericated. I dont want to bore it out because this will still be my DD. Nor do I want to put a 351 in it. I am still running stock gears (3.55 I believe 4.11 soon to come) My trans is a AOD fresh rebuild with a shift kit. I dont pull a lot a stuff with it, I plan on leveling it and I am running 31x10.50R15

The stock intake is gonna limit your power. The GT40 heads will work fine on your stock engine. I think 15mpg is asking alot if you wanna push power to 300.

Best/cheapest bolt power upgrade for you is to drop in a 351w.

With your parts list , you will get around 275 hp , the intake will work fine , its good for 350+ HP , if you want more , better heads and more cam , then you would need MAF for it to run right....Lew

Yeah 275 HP is a good upgrade over stock , the 302 computer will run the 351 , but tuning may be needed to get the most out of it ...

Like Lew52 said. a 5.0 EEC will run a 5.8, but not to its full potential. You really need a 5.8 EEC. The 5.8 has a different air/fuel mixture, and different timing.

What.. you plan on spooling the motor to 6000rpm all the time? More wasted coin.. save it for gears.

Dronemasters? Think Magnaflow.

You already got one of those so you're going to need something a little larger but still nothing too wild.

Bottom line is heads, cam, and exhaust will get you there but the cam you use will depend upon whether you have mass air or not.

^^^ ditto. Most of those bolt on gizmos won't make much of a difference in seat of the pants power. Mostly just lighten your wallet.

It might be hard to get to 15 mpg if you are at 13 now and you are planning to go to 4.10 gears with the same transmission. What is wrong with the engine you have now?

What are you trying to accomplish with that much power? Does this truck pull trailers or are you just trying to make it beefed up for show off purposes?
But in addition to what was already said, don't waste your money on a flowmaster. I've never had a problem with drone on the two vehicles I've had with flowmasters, but apparently everyone else that's ever had one had that issue. The other problem I see with flowmasters is the price. The summit street and strip mufflers that I got were 25 bucks a piece on sail and I got 2. One flowmaster 40 (which sounds the exact same for future reference) is about 60-70 dollars. Waste of money. a throttle body spacer is a waste, and your trucks current intake is a cold air intake. You don't need underdrive pulleys unless you're really gonna keep the motor spooled tight all the time but I don't foresee that happening. You should look into a good set of longtube headers, a more aggressive cam, and a better set of heads. but like was already said, you will probably need mass air to get it to run decent with all of these changes.

Horsepower does not make more mpg, its torque. From what I have read through, I think you'd be happy with just a stock 351w. It only has 210hp but it has 330 torque, which is what make it a great truck engine and gets decent mpg. you probably get the same if not more mpg with the 351w.

i just want to be able to go up hills with out losing 5-10 mph on the highway, without staying hard in the throttle. i dont want a 10 sec truck either just something with a little more get up and go. you know? the motor thats in there only has 80k miles on it. i aappericate all the help ive gotten from everyone on here, i didnt know about the pulleys and the throttle body spacer and intake was a waste of money. last time i ever listen to a guy at advance auto parts lol
