I do believe there are different bolt patterns depending on if you have a three speed or four speed tranny.

I may have mis-typed on that being different. Not sure I remember what I remember on that. I have Y blocks on my mind. Do you need the steel ring that bolts to the rear of the block?

I have not torn into it so I am unaware if there is a steel ring. It is a flathead bellhousing if that matters.

AFAIK they didn't use the separate cast iron half-bell for '53. Here is a pic of the bell for the 53 flathead V8 but with the 4-sp trans. The 53 V8 bellhousing for the LD 3-sp is among the rarest pieces on earth.

What is the difference between the 3 speed and 4 speed? What makes the 3 speed so rare?

I had one of those with the u-shaped front mount a few years back. You do have the front mount, don't you?

The mounting holes for the 3 speed are much closer together, for one thing. Somewhere around 5 inches vs 7 inches. Can't answer the rarity question. Production numbers, perhaps?.

I meant it's rare to find a LD 3-sp bellhousing nowadays. Most got thrown away when transplant engines were installed, I'd assume. I checked the flathead forum, 3 people there looking for them over the last year. eBay is likely the best place to look.

Chappys4life, if you're looking for a bellhousing to modify for a T5, the wider mounting surface of the 4-speed bellhousing might be better. I wonder where the dimensions could be found?

The first pic is the '53 flattie bellhousing for the LD 3-speed.

The second pic has the dimensions for the LD 3-speed bolt holes. The black is the outline of the machined mounting surface, the blue is the factory ford holes, the orange is the approximate locations for the S-10 T5 transmission holes.

From Ross's pic, it looks like the 4-speed bellhousing would be easier to modify for a T5. If that,s not why Chappys4life is looking for a bellhousing, sorry for the hijack.
