Rear main seal?

I'm trying to replace the rear main seal. I posted a pic below. The orange seal on the bottom is the one that was in the motor. The seal on top is the one I'm having trouble getting back in. I'm wondering if I need a different seal?

What trouble are you having? Trouble getting the lip over the crankshaft? Trouble getting the seal OD into the block?

In the picture, the seals *look* the same, but without putting calipers on both to check exact size, who can say for sure?

The rubber lip starts fine. I can only get the seal flush with the crank after that it feels like its hanging up.

BTW, I read a thread at ford six! I think that may be you? Good info! Anyhow, Ive decided to order the rubber seal and try it.

I believe you need a seal driver the correct size and the seal gets driven into the block using a hammer. It is not a slip fit.

Thanks Jim!
I got it! I used a piece of PVC schedule 40 and a block of wood. I also got the flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, idler, throughout bearing, and new to me NP 435 in place!!

Well at least its not leaking anymore. The one piece pan gasket is the way to go! If I had to do over, I would have pulled motor on out.

Amphenol, how did you get the old one out? Any special tools required? I just bought a Onan genset with what research shows to be a Ford CSG-649 300C.I.D. Looks like rear seal is leaking into the gen head. Thx.

I used a flat screwdriver and a hammer.

Just be careful not to scar the crankshaft. I normally use a "seal" puller.
