External vs internal regulator

If I wanted to change out an externally regulated AC alternator for an internally regulated one what changes if any would have to be done to the wiring? Just unplugging the harness to the current external regulator would be too simple and nothing seems to be simple these days

It is a matter of excising the wiring associated with the external regulator.

Are you attempting to retrofit a 3G alternator??

FYI: FE owners with hi-mount alternators

If your 3G is off a Taurus, Contour, or Windstar, the aluminum boss/ear on the rear case will need to be removed with a hacksaw because the boss will create interference against the passenger side cylinder head.

3Gs from Mustangs, Cougars, and T-birds do not have the boss.

Didn't put the 560 ohm resistor into the ignition line. Would that cause it to keep running even when you turn the key off?

Nope...That's a problem with the ignition switch.

Are you talking about the pink resistor wire? If you are there is a brown wire that comes off it by the firer wall connection the goes to the start relay. This a by pass wire to give the coil full voltage for starting. Using a different wire than the pink resistor will evenually burn out the coil. Are you getting voltage to the coil with ignition turned off?

had typed a bunch of stuff, then realized we may not have enough information just yet.

how did you hook up the 3g's red/green wire?

you didn't wire the 3g's green/red wire to the coil, did you?

There were two different resistor wires used 1971/72, not one, as it depended on the applications.

COLF-12250-A .. Resistor Wire-Ignition Coil (Motorcraft DY-37).

61.49" long / Color coded Pink / 1.30-1.40 ohms resistance / #20 gauge Wire / All 1960/70 FoMoCo vehicles, some 1971/72's.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D1AZ-12250-A .. Resistor Wire-Ignition Coil (Motorcraft DY-84-A).

60" long / Color coded RED w/GREEN stripes / 1.30-1.40 ohms resistance / #16 gauge Wire / Some 1971/72 and all 1973/76 FoMoCo vehicles.

With both wires having the same ohms, what is different between the two? (for working with coil)
