TTBOMK, 1996 model year in the F-series.
They found their way into the cars with electric fans before that.

Howdy Jim,
On a 4.9 do you think a 95 Mustang 3G alt would fit (7" spread or would you need to use the 8.25") to convert to a 3G setup ??? Dave

I've never done an I-6, but if I recall from other threads, the 4.9/300 uses the 7" spread version.

Talking Thanks

I've been asked about it a few times, so I wanted to have good info to give out. I went to my favorite JY Fri. and I found one ... just wanted to confirm it.

I picked up a set of 98 Windstar E-fans they are a nice tight fit on my radiator ... I want to get the conversion going next week our 100* days willl be here soon !!!
My 6 Liter tune up netted me m14.47 MPG for 166+ miles over a 5,000 high mountain on a 90* A/C on for 3 hrs. mid day ... can't wait for the fans and headers YES !!! Dave

My 94 used the 8.25. It also bolted right in and if you drill and tap the upper bolt to 3/8-16 thread your old upper bolt can be reused.

Here's a shot of my current alternator...

The two bolts currently fastening the existing 2G are marked with a red dot and they are about 6" apart. For the 3G, I'm thinking I would use the same upper mount, but the lower would be the one to the left and down a bit of the existing one - they seem to be about 7" apart, which would be the correct dimension for the "smaller" 3G.

Using those mounting locations would pull the alternator in closer to the engine - am I going to have any clearance issues as a result?

Any insight appreciated.

Yes you will reuse the bottom bolt and the top bolt will also be reused in that hole on to next to the other bracket bolt. If you get it from the right donor vehicle you shouldn't even have to swap pullies. The top bolt hole will be a cleaner fit if you drill out the top hole in the donor alternator and tap it to 3/8-16 thread.

You lost me there a bit. I think what you are saying is this - I'll itemize for clarity...

1) Both bolts get re-used
2) Lower bolt-holes get re-used
3) Upper mounting location changes to more outbound one - the currently un-used one out at the end of the bracket. If that's the case, I'll need the 8.25" 3G alternator.

Great picture, thanks. And yes, confirmed, 8.25" 3G required. Of course, I've got two 7" 3G's on the shelf.

Just to follow-up on this thread with some info specific to the 4.9. For the final two years, '95 & '96, the 4.9 in the F150 finally got a 3G from the factory, but NOT the one "everyone" suggests as a retrofit - the one with the mounts 180 degrees across from each other, 8" apart (as used on the 3.8 Taurus and others).

The one used by the factory mounts the same as the 2G, with the ears about 120 degrees apart. It's Ford part# F2UU-10300-EA, and is also used on the '92 - '96 E-series Van. Here's a pic...

From what I've read, this one ^^^ may put the wiring in a more accessible location than the Taurus alternator, so it may be a slightly "better" option. I suspect the Taurus alternator has been more frequently recommended simply because it has better availability in the junkyard.

One final note before you head out to the junkyard in search of this alternator.... Bolt-head size is 1/2" for the upper and 9/16" for the lower. This engine sure is a jumbled-up mess of Metric and English fasteners.

Some additional info.... The above pictured alternator is 95 Amp and often referenced in the after-market as Lester 7755. The 8" "Taurus" alternator is 130 Amp and referenced as Lester 7756. So if you're looking for some greater amperage output, the 8" one might be what you want after all.

A footnote to my footnote... The upper bolt comes out pretty easy - no sweat there. The bottom one is in there like it wants to be there forever. I'd imagine that's especially true if it's the original alternator, which seemed to be the case for the one I came across at the junkyard. I was standing on my 3/8" Craftsman ratchet and couldn't get it to move, so assume a 15"+ breaker bar is required.

Mind you, it wouldn't surprise me if I snapped the bolt standing on my breaker bar. Indeed at that point the alternator would go to the grave attached to the engine.

Alternator Parts

Hello and good morning SCRebel.

I have a 87 F150 5.0L E4OD 2WD XLT Lariat single cab.

There are several 3G Alternators at the boneyard already pulled and on a shelve. Preferably, I want at least 120 Amp.

My questions are: Where do I purchase the necessary wiring, mega fuse, etcetera?

Is there any information on the alternator designating amperage and perhaps the year.

Please advise and thank you.

I got most of the wiring supplies from ebay. Bought terminals and heat shrink from delcity.

Also here is info on the 3g interchange
