I put money down on a 58 and a 60 custom cab, both farmyard shortbed pickups. I had a 57 once that I loved and always wanted another. My first choice was another 57 but I'd always thought I'd take a 58 if I found one. I have found very few 57s over the years, 90% of what I find are 1960s and I just never liked the grill/hood on those. We'll see what kind of mix I come up with to make one truck out of these two. I'm going to get them today, about 240 miles from here.

 

They look fairly unmolested from the first glance! After you have them sitting around at home for awhile, those mail slots in the front of the '60 hood will grow on you!

Whaahoo Let the fun begin. Thanks for the pictures, looks like you have the makings of a great project. What engine, trans do these have or are you going to modernize the drive train. I would like to see the pictures of these two piggy backed on your trailer.

Well, after the 4 hour drive I get to the farm and they are both long beds. Cut to the chase and I bring them home anyway. The 60 is in real decent condition, very solid floors and foot wells, the best I have seen in years, maybe decades. It does need cab corners. The 58 is pretty rough but has decent looking cab corners, a good windshield, hood, grille, front valance and quite a few good bits and pieces. The 58 is a 223 and the 60 is a 292. Here are my engine choices, assuming the 292 doesn't run, #1 is a 71 302/automatic from a motorhome with 58,000 miles. #2 is the 425 olds languishing in a 66 Toronado I can't seem to get sold. Also have a line on a cheap 65 Buick that is supposed to run good, so that little nailhead is also on the possibles list. One other possibility is the drivetrain from my 92 F-250. That's a 300-6 with Offy C intake, efi exhaust hooked to a ZF 5 speed. The only problem with that is it gets horrible mileage, 12 at best.

I vote for the 300 six and 5 speed. None of your other choices seem like they'd get very good mileage either. Also, if you plan on modernizing the chassis components on the fridge, maybe you should at least do some quick measurements and see if you could swap the fridge bed and cab onto the '92 chassis. I know it's a lot of work and hurdles to overcome, but like I posted last week, at least it would all be engineered. Think about the cost of upgrading to power steering, disc brakes, IFS, modern rear axle ratio etc. Besides, the drivetrain and frame in your F250 is far more heavy duty. I haven't swapped a body before, so I'm just casting this out as a possibility.

It sounds good but body/frame swaps seldom end up well. The 92 is heavy duty F-250 and rides like a lumber wagon, plus it's too tall. Part of the reason for wanting an older truck is they sit low and are easy to reach over the side and get stuff from the bed. The steering actually seems real tight on the 60. After an thorough inspection I might just keep the whole stock front end, maybe convert to disc brakes and for sure at least a dual master cylinder and power booster. I think with the 302 set up right and a nice set of dual exhaust it might get 17-18 mpg

 

I totally get it. Just so happens I am fond of inline sixes, manual transmissions and trucks that ride like lumber wagons (note my new avatar) and........ like Bob Seeger, I like 'em "way up firm and high". I do however, realize I'm in the minority here. My bed has 'steps' on the sides and a foot loop on the rear bumper so I can reach my stuff! Good luck with your build and keep us posted. GB

 

willowbilly3, With the long beds you just have more of a good thing.LOL As for the drive train it depends on how you plan to use the truck. The 292 if it is useable is a good engine and with the right gearing it sould give decent milage. If you change to deferent drive train I vote for the 302 with an OD trans. auto or stick. I like a ford in a ford.

Thanks guys. I'm not totally turned off that they are longbeds. I just had a dream truck I had always hoped to own a 57 short wide bed with a big window and it would be a dream in a dream if it was a red and white Merc with a 312 and 3 speed/overdrive. As old age and certain compromises set it, these trucks might be as close as I get. Plus I still have a hotrod in the garage that needs finished before I really dig into these trucks much beyond parts accumulation.
