I have a very powerful graffiti remover, the best ones have a citrus element to them, but it may strip more than just the marker.

Try one of the Mr Clean majic erasers or one of the generics. Mr Clean does work, I drive a school bus and we have this issue a lot. They used to paint over or replace the material, I tried the eraser and it worked on my bus! I also recommended it to the shop that does the upholstery, dont know if they did anything however?

Alcohol usually removes permanent marker. Stealerships spraypaint the cloth and carpet, most will give a spot fix for a few bucks.

Try coloring over the permanent marker with a dry erase marker... and wipe it as you go. It works like a champ on dry erase boards when someone "accidentally" writes with permanent marker on one.

Don't use any harsh solvents like brake cleaner or lacquer thinner.

What is the marker on, plastic or cloth/leather?

I've had good luck removing Sharpie with MAF Cleaner, it's a much milder solvent and plastic safe.
