rebuild advice/oild additive

Hi everyone, i had a few questions.. I am itching to rebuild/replace my 5.8 on my 95 f150. It runs rough, slow, and its tired with 245,000 miles on it. I used restore engine restorer oil additive & lubricant to see if it would help. I don't think its really helping...

first off, i was wondering how long would it take for the oil additive to do it's job if it was effective?

and secondly.. If i didn't have the money to replace the whole engine, what rebuild kit would you all recommend? I see so many different brands etc. and Im lookin for some direction, and if it's worth getting or should i just keep saving and replace the whole engine with a reman..

thanks

J

What you're asking is a completely different topic than was originally posted about, but I'll answer for you.

The additive you put in is a band aid. It's ment to help your engine along so you can sell it.
A long term solution is not in a bottle.
With 240k it's doubtful you'll notice anything at all. It should take about 100 miles or 2-3 hours of running for the additive to get throughout the engine and all the little places like lifters and rear main seal area. It will help... How much is depending on how worn out your engine really is.

You'll really need to pull the whole engine to be able to do any worthwhile work. But at that mileage, it probably needs to be bored, because if the cylinders are egg shaped, new rings are a waste. You can still do it. It's your truck. But for that many miles you should look into getting the engine replaced or send to a machine shop for work to be done.

Start a new thread and it will be more beneficial for you in the long run.

When did you get this? -'00 7.3 e350 chateau; 4x4 zf6
Are you building it or what. I've never heard of a van with a manual trans after 1980. We need pics (new thread in proper location, but with a link here)

I bought it from a guy who started the 4x conversion....and by start I mean buy a bunch of parts and hack out suspension components, then he threw his hands. I wasn't lookin, but I've always liked diesel 4x4 vans and I'm an idiot when it comes to findin stuff on CL and buying it. I finished it last winter and did the trans at the same time (was doin shafts anyway). I already had the trans layin in my shop, was already doin shafts...figured it was a misewell and the only thing I hate more than a 5 or 6 speed auto is a 4 speed auto. No way would ford put a manual trans in these vans, pedals don't fit well enough and would definitely generate complaints but I'm cool with it, not all girls can be 10's...

no build thread, just hazy memories of late nights and beer drinkin. Sorta how it always goes....All the parts I used for 4x and trans were basically off the shelf and oem jy parts short of the pedal assembly, whose design i stole from a guy with a white van zf build thread thanks to google.

HUH? lolz

Just to say it I did the seafoam treatmenbt to a 95 351 with 112K on it. It dislodged carbon (I assume) and took out two cylinders :/ Ill never do it to a unknown engine again.. However do it to my toyota all the time and it keeps her ticking clean. I chock it up to bad luck but feel the need to share. Was a good engine before I opened that bottle...

UPDATE: This project never took off before selling my 95. At some point though I am planning on doing the same exact build for my new 94, but it won't be any time real soon.
