Power Steering Pump

I have read the numerous posts in the forum that say the 20-6244 PS pump is the greatest thing since sliced bread. So I want one, but have found that they are no longer available.

The 20-7878 is what comes up for my truck ('96 7.5L) on O'Reillys site. Is this something different or will it do just as good?

Thanks in advance, Joe

I'm pretty sure that was the Saginaw pump with a retrofit bracket for the small block trucks. And yes, it's been an obsolete part number through Cardone for a while now.

I know that there's info on here for using parts from an E-series van to put a Saginaw pump in. The pump/AC bracket needs to be swapped, and you need to use a pressure line from an older truck. The reason for doing this swap is to get the more reliable, quieter Saginaw pump.

Doing a search for "Saginaw" might help. Not sure what's available for the 460.

*edit

Looks like all you'd need are parts from an E-series with a 460. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...g-whining.html

Pumped up...

Joe: You did not say what truck you have: F or E Series? An F-Series would have the Ford pump while an E-series would have the Saginaw pump; most like the 2nd of the two part #s given in your post. If you have a truck and are doing the Saginaw swap then that 2nd part # most closely resembles the pumps used on the vans. That 2nd part # pump also seems to have a larger reservoir which is a plus. Either way, a larger external cooler can help with the life of both the pump and the steering gear. When I did the Saginaw swap on my F350 I replaced the factory tube cooler with a finned/turbo flow type PS fluid cooler from a 1999+ Super Duty.

Of course, I have also done the hydro boost conversion on my truck so I used pump #20-8730 which specs out from a 1985 GMC 2500 Diesel. If you have any thoughts about doing a hydro boost conversion at a later date I would suggest that you use this pump and just properly cap off the 2nd return port.

Remember, you will also want to get the 460 brackets from a van to accommodate that Saginaw pump. While you might be able to grind away material to make the Saginaw pump fit (as I have seen others do) you would be compromising bracket strength and your own safety.

Thanks for the replys.

I found a post with the part number 20-6244 and the new pressure hose part number that a guy used in a 460. The original pump thats in there is making a lot of noise so I was hoping to be able to just buy something at a parts store rather than going on a junk yard safari.

Yeah you can get one of those Saginaw pumps from a 90's E-series van from the junkyard. You'll need the E-van bracket as well.
