4.6 or 5.4 what do I have?
I have pulled the 4.6 engine out of my 2000 expedition (engine code 6) and I believe it to be the Romeo version. Ok I bought a replacement from a junk yard. It was from a 97 expediton vin 6 on this one as well. Ok I bought all this before reading up the differences. Okay now upon trying to verify my engines.
The one out of my 2000 has the 11 bolt valve covers and 6 bolt flywheel. This is all consistent with the Romeo so I believe it to be the original engine.
No while checking out my donor (which I believe to be a Romeo 4.6 according to VIN cod 6). Well it has a 6 bolt crank but the passenger side head has 14 vavle coverbolts. The drivers side has 13 valve cover bolts? The vavle cover has its a 4.6L. Upon looking on the head it clearly says 5.4 in the casting number area.
Here is some issues with that. I was told that the 5.4 never had coil packs. When I pulled this engine out of the Expedition it had the coil pack but and the intake is missing the bolt holes to hold down the coil on plugs.
Could someone have put a 5.4 and swapped the upper intake (runners) from the 4.6L. Is there a physical way to tell a 4.6 from a 5.4 from the outside like you can the 302/351?
Thanks for any help
Gerald

Just guessing here, but it sounds like you might have a Windsor. Or a Romeo that someone put Windsor heads on.
Upper intake will NOT swap between the 4.6 and the 5.4
There is a company out there making adapters to swap the intakes between the two but there very expensive and they just started making them a couple years ago. So it's very unlikely.
They did put 4.6 Windsors in some of the trucks!

The 5.4l never had coil packs period. Except for mine that is haha (5.4l swap).
The windsor 4.6l was also available in the F-150. No question there.
It is possible that someone swapped a 5.4l head onto your truck as well. The heads are the same in every way. So say your truck previously had a spark plug blow and someone though it was easiest to swap heads.
The only way is check the block casting number on your engine, or measure the deck height of the block, other than that the 5.4l is the same in every way to a 4.6l engine. The 5.4l has a taller deck height because of the extra stroke.

After looking closer I do believe it's a 4.6 but will 5.4 heads just bolt right on like 302/351 heads swap out?
The Donor does have a 6 bolt crank which no 5.4 had correct? Also why the different number of valve cover bolts on the two heads 14 and 13. Windsors 4.6 both had 13 bolt valve covers right?
Thanks,

okay now one more question, I turned both upside down and both have 6 bolt cranks. The one with the 5.4 heads has an extra pin looking thingy in the main caps? So I assume this is totally a 4.6 windsor engine correct? I thought they all had 8 bolt crankshafts? Did some have 6 bolt cranks also?
