ZF5 and Borg Warner 1356 Questions....

So I got a FREE small block ZF5 and Borg Warner 1356 from my father in law. I literally just got done pulling everything and was curious to what all the electronics were on the transmission and t-case.

The truck is a 1988 f250 4x4 with a 351.

With both of these units function without the electronics? I want to drop them in my 1973 F100 and dont want to mess with any electronics. Wanna try n keep it simple.

The truck had 130k on it. Anything I should do to either of these while I have them out?

The only electronics on that combo is for the reverse light and the little 4x4 lights on your dash.

Use ATF in both. DO NOT use gear lube.

With that mileage, I'd be splitting the transfer. This has nothing to do with how much the fwd was used, just a function of mileage. The oil pump, internal on the transfer case, is secured with a "nubin" cast into the transfer case housing. Just google Borg Warner 1356 and you'll see several suggestions for solving this problem. I had mine finally wear the *** through on a trip to Detroit. It took the pump out, it spun and could longer pump oil, and I lost the rear bushing in the tail housing. To repair mine I just drilled thru the new steel oil pump bracket and the transfer case housing and used a quarter inch bolt and sealed with an o ring and silicone. The truck now has over 300,000 and is doing fine. The selector linkage should also be looked at while it's apart, the early ones (thru 1990) have a system subject to wear, which gives the selector a lot of slop. Easy to remedy, when you look at it. Seems to be very common around the 150,000 mile mark...........
