You cannot go by the grille to ID the year. One reason: In September 1965, Ford obsoleted the 1965 grilles, replaced them with the 1966 grilles for use as service part replacements.

The truck is over 40 years old, so could have had a grille swap. All 1961/66 grilles will interchange, but 1961/64's have the park lamps mounted in the grilles. 1965/66's have the park lamps mounted above the grille in the upper grille panel.

The last 6 digits of the VIN decode to the year and month the truck was assembled.

Alright then. I'm going to get the truck on my spring break in a week, i'll post more information and pictures when i get it home. I'm excited, this'll be my first build.

I found this 460 with tranny on ebay ( http://www.ebay.com/itm/460-Ford-Engine-With-C6-Transmission/231282153504?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D29266%26meid%3Da6c5072302e24289ade7da11b09f2d3d%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D5%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D161445577779&rt=nc ). I was thinking about using it for my 1975 F100 but this motor is from a 1965 Ford 100 and I'm not sure if it would work in my 75.

Man you got it going on, you tagged a 3 year old post, about an engine 3000 miles away and is listed local pick up only, that came from a year truck that a 460 was never installed in.

Yes the 460 will bolt directly in your truck with the matching engine perches.

Before I put $1900.00 in a used engine, I would find a rebuildable one for $2-300.00 and put the rest in the build.

Number Dummy can help.

Wow, I had no idea that it was a pick up and no delivery. Like I said though, I'm just thinking about it and the 390 that is in my truck seems to be fine, it don't smoke none and there are plenty of other things that I need to address first before i get too creative with my $800 work horse. Thanks for the good advice about getting a rebuildable, much obliged.

Thorn5150: Would you mind starting a new thread on your build? This thread is more than 3 years old, and it gets confusing trying to sort things out.
The collective experience here at FTE can save you alot of headache and trouble.
John has a wealth of knowledge for upgrades, NumberDummy is the mega parts man, and I did the 460 swap into a '66 - it is easier than you think, but as John points out, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

I certainly don't mean to leave anyone else out!
There is so much more here as well.
If you start a new thread, we can better help you out with your build.
Thanks!

Hey banjopicker, yea I suppose I'll try to start a new thread but I'm new here and the instructions told me that I can't ask any questions until I had 10 days on the site and answered 5 posts. I'll try to see if I can start a new thread with my limited on site experience here, still just cutting my teeth on this site. Thanks for the heads up on NumberDummy and John.

Bro, Read the link that you posted and saw. "Sold as-is. No shipping. You pick up."

If your engine is running as you stated, put some cheap gas in the tank an DRIVE.

Nolan, no how no way are you going to purchase a good reliable motor and trans for a thou or less. That's reality my friend.

A polite suggestion- find yourself a good used FE, maybe a 390, and hunt down a 3 or 4 speed trans (still gonna run you WELL over a grand unless you're buying junk) and a larger radiator. This is an easy swap you can probably do all by yourself with a basic set of tools and you'll still wind up with all the power you can use.

Why give yourself a headache? A swap like you are contemplating is not for amateurs...

Hi RexBlue, that is the best advice that I've heard on here so far. The 390 swap is going to be more practical. I've already looked at blocks which I can get for under a grand and an engine kit for $400, then use my existing heads and manifold, this keeps my cost under $1500. And, as you stated, its a much easier swap. Thanks for good advice and not being a jerk and making fun of my questions.

HOLD ON A MINUTE there....dont come on this site insinuating that people trying to be helpful are jerks. Thousands of people come to FTE for advice and thousands provide sound advice. Some of the folks that attempted to help you out have been around a long time and helped a lot of people. YOU have it backwards. Before you come on here and start asking for advice, get your ducks in a row so you can present your questions and get the advice you need. Do some research, etc. and switch to de-caf...
