1991 F250 Starting Problems

Hello and forgive me if my post is a little noobish as I am not a mechanic, just trying to fix an old truck!

I have a F250 that has been sitting for some years. I decided (with persuasion) to try and get it running.

When we turned the key with a tested fully charged battery nothing happened. The lights would come on in the cab but the car would do nothing upon attempting to start it. No clicking, nothing. We took out the starter bench tested it, working fine. We checked the battery cables etc etc. after a long agonizing battle with the parts of the charging system we could test we came to find out the transmission shifter was faulty and only needed to be moved up to engage.

The car attempts to turn over but does not. It sounds like it is out of gas. We filled each tank with a gallon to a gallon and a half of gas. We get the same result on both fuel tanks. When we try and start it we hear something that sounds like the fuel pump but after the initial time we try and start it we no longer hear the pump.

I am not sure what way to go or what to test next. I do not have any type of pressure gauges to check fuel pressure. What direction should i be moving towards or do you have any suggestions of where I should start?

It is a dual tank F250 efi V8 5.0 (the markings on the engine)

Thanks in advance for any information!

Scott

Well, we know we need 3 basic elements for it to run, air, fuel and spark. Pretty sure you're getting air, so we'll move on to fuel. If you don't have a pressure gauge, you can atleast see it your at least getting fuel pushed, despite we wont know if it the correct volume, in the vicinity of the fuel rail or line near it, there should be a test port for fuel pressure. It might still have a black cap on it, if so, remove it. this valve is like a valve stem on a tire. turn the key to on to pressurize, then oush in the valve core, fuel should squirt out, if not then we have a fuel issue. Then check for spark, they make all sorts of fancy tools for this, but in a pinch you can always pull a plug wire, then use a screwdriver to edge in there, then allow the metal portion to be near a grounded surface, block, intake, head or even the battery ground. Have someone crank and watch for spark. See what ya get and let us know, we'll be more than happy to help get you on the road again.
