84 with overdrive
Hi folks,
I have an 84 6.9D 4x4. The original owner added several aftermarket parts. Such as a banks turbo, gear vender overdrive, 88 gallon reserve tank in the bed just to name a few. I bought it from the second owner and he showed me how to activate the gear vender overdrive. Then he showed me a foot switch next to the high beam switch, in fact it looks like a high beam switch, and said it was for the factory overdrive. While driving if you flip the gear vender switch to low the gear vender gears down and then if you push the foot switch the transmission gears down or it did until my tranny quit.
So here's the problem. The repair shops are all telling me that my tranny doesn't have overdrive and that you can tell by the pan bolts. Non overdrive has 17 bolts and overdrive has 20. Now, clearly I have overdrive but are they correct and the foot switch is another aftermarket gizmo the original owner added?
Does anyone know it factory overdrive was an option and if so how do you activate it and where is the switch? It's the foot switch on mine factory?

No factory overdrive, the transmissions available were a Borg-Warner T-19 4 speed manual, and a Ford C-6 3 speed automatic. This is the case where maybe a picture is worth 1000 words, if you can snap some pics of the trans, bell housing, transfer case, and gear vendors, also the switches you speak of. But if you have 17 pan bolts, you have the C-6, never was a factory overdrive or even a lock-up converter.

Yes the foot switch is the actual on/off power switch for the Gear Vendor. It is the typical way it was set up originally. \
As stated above, there was no OEM over drive transmission for the F series is 84'. Jet performance used to take a C-6 and rework the guts to add over drive. I have not seen that option advertised on their site for several years though. It did not require any switch, it basically was turned into a manual E40D.
