Rear end swaps are quite common in these trucks and are often done to improve drivability. The originals had pretty low gears. If you can get a picture of it and/or some numbers off of it we may be able to identify it for you.

My custom Cab does not have t he trim around the door windows either, but did have the bright trim around the winshield. Also has only the recurculating heater, no fresh air intake. I do beilieve that custom cab trims were all special order.

In 56 the custom cabs came with the door badges, key lock on the drivers door and inside arm rests on both doors IIRC.

My 56' Custom Cab came with key locks in both doors and only a driver's arm rest. It has two now though.

Here's the complete skinny on the 56 CC:
One of the primary features of the custom cab was that the seat had full foam padding instead of springs and cloth padding. The custom cab also had red or black bolster and facings and red plaid vinyl seat upholstery.

In addition there was door trim and a special hard headliner, there was sound deadener on the floor and rear cab panels, armrest on the left door, a dome light in the cab with automatic door switches, twin sun visors, cigar lighter, fiberglass insulation on the forward cab wall, and extra chrome on grill, chrome wind wing window and divider chrome trim. And of course the Custom Cab Chrome door emblem under the window. It also had self cancelling turn signal built into the column.

The custom cab could be ordered in a two-tone paint combination of any body color plus a white roof and upper back panel.

The Magic-Aire fresh air heater system was still listed as a separate option, as were the full wrap around window, and chrome window trim. these were all options available on any F-model truck.

Headliners were different for a CC but no one is reproducing the Original style for the CC trucks.

I suggest that the "expert" is not aware that the familiar 1 piece housing 9" rear axle with the drop out the front carrier didn't come out until 57. In 56 all the ford rear axles had the bolt on rear sheet metal cover and integrated carrier.
