Met a nice woman today w/an '87 F-700 dump-truck run on issue. She says she turns off the ign, and truck still runs as if ign is on. Said she has to stall it to stop it. I posited a relay sticking perhaps, but disels are not my forte'. Any quick fixes, relays, common shorts, wire issues known in this series? Thanks! Bob-O

Tis' a disel. I never opened the hood due to rain here in NC this evening.

 

When you find out , let me know. Switch on top of the injector pump on Cummings. On the back side of the switch is a little ****, you can turn it with your hand. If you turn it and it shuts down with the key, buy the switch.

 

Thanks Gator, I thought it to be a simple issue (vehicle runs OK, just doesn't stop w/key.) Will update as I learn more. Back out there Monday. Bob-O

 

If its a b series cummins, its a common problem for the shut off solenoid to stop working, common fixes are to instal a aftermarket cable to pull the fuel shutoff linkage.

Or buy a new shut off solenoid. 360 bucks if I remember right..


I just re-read the post.. No B series in Fords that Ive ever seen in 87.. Must be a detroit, or a cat? Either one would have an electric solenoid valve. This would be where to start.

 

Also, gator sounds like your explaining the mechanical fuel shutoff valve on a 855 cummins engine with a pt pump. I dont think they'd find that in a 700. May have miss-understood what your were explaining though..

I'll get into this after hearing from you guys. This is a dump truck that they can't afford towing/on-site Wrenches for, but I used to run a Registered auto-body/mechanics gas-only repair shop NYS years ago, and with the right info, can wrench this diesel back to health Thanks!

 

Does it say ford on the valve cover?

If it does, its a new holland engine. There would be a shut off solenoid on that unit, not a shutoff valve.

Look on the injection pump when you turn the key on and off one of the linkages on the fuel pump should move. If its disconnected, re connect, if its not moving there is some wiring disconnected, or the solenoid itself has stopped working.

 

Can't swear it had Ford on the covers, may have just had a circle where the 'Ford' name would usually be. Memory says empty circle, but wouldn't bet the farm. Do disels just shut fuel to the engine to stop? I recall there was an interesting long and complicated linkage assembly w/a substantial electrical solenoid about the size of a fist on the passenger side of this engine that ran from above the oil pan up a foot or more to a unit piped to fuel lines. The linkage alone must cost over a hundred or so, and the wiring to the solenoid must of had at least six or more wires. If disels stop by cutting off fuel, I know where to shine the light now.
