Well I finally got to installing my 11 take off wheels I had laying around since last year. I went with the AT/3's for tires.
I had an issue balancing one of them and thought I got it, although it took too much weight for my liking, and the truck shimmys bad around 60-70. The tires have a nice tread pattern and I went with the same 285/65/18 Load E.
I am hoping that the distributor will do right by me and send me a new tire that will balance better and not cause the rear to shake...This is the first set of Cooper Truck Tires I have sold and I figured I would try them myself so I could give some first hand reports to my customers. So far I am not overly pleased but I dont have that many miles on them, less than 100, and the shimmy isnt helping. So like I said I hope the distributor does right by me, and the next tire balances better, the shimmy goes away, and I will no longer regret not spending the extra money on BFG's.
My question is for anyone that has these tires what has been your experience...good or bad.
Thanks,
Sarge

I have about 6k miles on my AT/3 and have had no problems. I love these tires, I like the stiff sidewall which is great for supporting the weight of my truck and the tread pattern is good for every terrain except deep mud. If they would make a 35x12.5x20 that would be the only tire I would buy for the rest of my life.
new set of at's 6 months ago.problem with balance in right rear where all techs know is the place you put the problem tire.it's time to rotatate so we will see if the right front acts up.
I have a brand new set on my truck, and no problems. Did you try and spin the tire 180 degrees on the wheel and rebalance ??? Most of the time this cures an excessive weight needed problem. I have 1 tire that took a little over 6 ounces of weight to get it in balance, but that's not a lot for a tire that weighs in at over 50 pounds. Did you match up the yellow or white dot on the tire sidewall with the valve stem ??? That matches the high spot in the tire with the low spot on the wheel. If you don't do that, you will have balance problems. Most people, including the guy who was flipping hamburgers yesterday, and is now mounting tires at your local tire dealer DO NOT KNOW about this.

Sarge, I have the AT/3's on my 04 dually in 285/75/16. I have about 7k on them now and love them. No balance or shimmy problems and they seem to be wearing very well. I have had 3 sets of Coopers on both F-350's and also have just put them on the Chevy dually and have had only 1 problem with 1 tire about 6 years ago that the dealer replaced for free. I love the AT/3's

I have had balance problems with other brands of tires and when I do, I take the truck to the local Ford dealer and they always balance the tires better than anybody else. Go figure...
I am glad to hear that the tires are doing well for you guys. My tires didnt come with any marks on them so there was no way to match anything up with the valve stem. I did move the tire 2 times and it got better, but when you spin the tire on the balancer it has a up/down type movement.
Ive been doing this a long time and never flipped burgers so Im no rookie. I guess the tire that is "bad" took 5 oz on outside and like .75 on the inside. I guess Im just **** and dont want wheel weights around the whole wheel.
I will post the results from the distributor tomorrow.

Oh what memories. I used to work at a truck stop in Texas waaaay back before I joined the Air Force. We had to manually change the big truck tires because the owner was too cheap to get a tire changing machine that worked. I ended up getting a hernia that I didn't know about until I tried to join the AF. What a pain!

I called the distributor Monday, the had a new tire to me Tuesday. I havent had a chance to remove and replace the tire as of yet...too busy with paying customer work. The tire supply guy also popped in and we were talking about the need for a ton of weights. So I am going to use Dyna beads, he says they will balance as I go, no need for wheel weights. I spoke to another member here that uses them and hasnt had an issue, locally though the reviews are mixed.
I will keep the thread updated with the results with the use of Dyna Beads.

I would love to hear first hand experience with dynabeds as the opinions are all over the sky. Just had 19.5 tires replaced at local shops and they are all against them saying dynabeds don't work. I never had my 19.5 wheels balanced and never had shaking even with cheap tires.
The big shop has several machines, but they replaced 19.5 tires with hand irons BTW
I cant do 19.5's on my machine either, I have to use hand irons, but to say that the video shows the "right way" to do it, well its only right if thats all you have I guess. I prefer doing it the "right way" using the machine, less chances to get hurt.
But thats just my opinion and my 20 years experience.

Here is a picture of the dot I was talking about. It matches up the high spot of the tire with the low spot of the wheel, or visa-versa (I can't remember). With the dot matched up to the valve stem, you will have the least amount of up & down movement, and it makes balancing much easier. The dot on this one is yellow and about 3" out from the bead. The dots come in many colors, but they are usually easy to see against the black tire.
