Diagnosis please

08 PSD 350 daully w/ tow boss.
broke down towing 5th wheel, and here is what happened;

Engine had a whining noise
pushed on accelerator tach went up but engine lack power as if tranny was not engaged
engine/rad temp went hot

I pulled off to side of road and went to check belts and anti freeze level.
Notice in the rear of the engine compartment on passenger side something sprayed over engine and was leaking out from bottom of truck, it was a clear type of oil an not very thick.

Any mechanic's have any idea's?
Suggestions on any other sites that I can ask this question?

Thanks in Advance

limp mode because of an over heat situation. Passenger side then my thoughts are the heater core or a hose.

The limp mode seems correct, but do not know want the light colored oily substance was?

Ford Gold coolant is colorless when thin, and has an oily feel to it. All coolant feels oily.

You said you checked your coolant level, but didn't tell us if it was full or low. You would have to lose a lot before it would overheat from a leak.

Did you try running it again after it had cooled off? Was it still sluggish? Limp mode will clear itself once it cools down. Should also show an engine warning light, which will go off once it cools.

Was the coolant level low or okay?

I had heater hose blow off on my 08 dually on passenger side; wasn't real noticable what it was till I put more water in it and saw it pumping same to ground behind passenger wheel (actually wife saw it).

I was pulling at time; engine had downshifted prior and over-rev going down steep grade.

No reason found by dealer for hose blowing off; but, next year the radiator and thermostats were replaced (hyper extended).

Primary thermostat cycling open and closed because secondary thermostat hyperextended open puts real shock on radiator and rest of coolant system; time the closing of the thermostat with a downshift and one heck of a water hammer...... something gotta give......

The gold coolant will look pretty clear when it blows but will dry with white spray pattern......

Good luck,

Bob

Thanks for the info, My intent was to check those two items, but I shut down soon I noticed that something sprayed over engine and was leaking from the bottom of truck and called for the tow, as it was beyond my ability to repair.

Okay. It sure sounds like you are leaking coolant from somewhere. I mentioned the radiator over on the RV forum, simply because it is so common on the 6.4.

I don't speak 6.4, but saw that thread and wanted to at least bump for you over here. Good luck with her.
