Turbo 292 yblock

I've been throwing around the idea of putting twin turbos on my 292 yblock. My truck is a truck not a race car, the main goal is I think it would be a cool project and a little extra power never hurt anything, but it will probably never really be fully wound out and hot rodded around.

I feel like the motor could probably handle around 7psi or so of boost. Just wondering if anyone had any ideas on what turbo to use, looking for probably a 4cyl car that came stock with a turbo that I could find easily at a junk yard.
Only problem is I really don't know how to figure out how much flow I need or how to know which pair would work well? Any input on all of this?

Colin; Check-out Hot Rod magazine's May 2012. They have an article the will help you wrap your head around all the info you need to set up your first turbo.
I for one would like to see you do this project. From a working truck stand point you would be able to run up and down the cascades without braking stride.
Good luck in your quest!

i would look for the turbos off a Turbo T-Bird, specifically the 87 version with the intercooler. i see a few of them in the local pick a part yard from time to to time (or a SVO Mustang same thing but harder to find) and think they should work out pretty good.

a 292 is roughly 4.8L and the turbo t-bird was a 2.3l so two of them should feed your 292 pretty easily seeing as the 292 heads are not overly efficient port designs.

but there is lots of info on the net about turbos and proper selection and sizing, so do some research on the subject.

sounds like an interesting project. keep us informed.

someone else was actually telling me to look for those also. Seems like they're work pretty well, was reading online and looks like they made about 9-15psi of boost depending on auto or manual trans. That could always be brought down with wastegates depending on what it ends up actually putting out on the truck.

I'll poke around in the junk yards, just worried it might be hard to find two of these without going broke. I feel like I don't see many of those cars around let alone at the pull-a-parts.

The Mercury Cougar in 1986 and 1987 also had this setup. I had an 86. According to the PSI gauge on the dash, it would routinely get in the ballpark of 15 psi.
