My 97 F150, 4.2 V6, is overheating. I have coolant. When I turn on the heat in the cab, the engine will cool down. I took it to the shop. They replace the thermostat and the timeing cover which was cracked. This did not solve the problem. If I run with the heat on it runs fine. When I turn the heat off the temperature gauge goes to Hot. Help

 

There's two possible things I can think of. First off, your water pump might not be working and second, you might just need to flush your radiator out since it might be a little clogged.

I think that f150-az is on the right track with the plugged rad. Might want to flush the cooling system and see what happens.

 

I have a similar situation. Shop said my timing cover broke because it might have been cracked. He broke it. It still overheats. The waterpump timingchain and gears were also changed. Then they said to check the radiator. Im taking it to a different shop tomorrow to check the intake gaskets.

 

Thanks guys for the tip on flushing the radiator. I am having that done now. I will let you know how it works.

I had my radiator rodded out today. The guy at the shop said it needed it. After over heating the mold clay left in the radiator from the factory loosens , collects and clogs the radiator. Overheating is not my problem now.

Cracked timing cover ??Could?? mean you have "oil in your coolant"(overheating) and "coolant in your oil"(goodbye engine)

CHANGE your OIL and CHANGE your COOLANT!!

 

Cracked timing cover was replaced. I found out I had poor flow through the radiator.
