1968 F-100 Custom Cab Engine Drop-In
Hello All! It's been at least 6 months since i've been on here, partly due because i had actually sold my 68 f-100 custom cab. Now, i have bought her back! The previous owner blew the 360 that it had in it...he never heard about "checking the oil", so its seized up, and all out no good. As of now, I am looking at engine options. The truck was custom ordered from a man in Texas from the Kansas City plant. The truck was ordered(and still has) The t-18 four speed in it, the 360 transmission, and a ford 9in rearend with 3.25 gears. Needless to say, the research has been done on the truck. My friend has a 300 i6 sitting in his garage, and yes, i know, the engine mounts, bellhousing, throttle linkage, radiator, and a list, has to change to adapt to it. Or, I can go ahead and drop another 360 or 390 back in it, and call it a quick swap. what do you think I should do??

Yes, Yes, I've heard many a people say that very thing haha. I know each side has its drawbacks, one is time, the other is money, and even ease of the swap. I'm just not completely sure where to begin. I have acquired small block ford engine mounts which were originally used in my friends truck when he had the i6, before he swapped in another engine. I also have a possible small block bellhousing to replace the b.b. bellhousing on the 4 speed. Would the radiator matter? or could I just keep the same 360 radiator? and what about throttle linkage? I'm not sure who would sell just the linkage for a carter 1 barrel carb..too many questions.

Even with everything in questiion, in the end, I'll still have a good, strong truck that will last me. I'm not so much into big engines, as everybody in my part of the woods likes them. I guess I'm the "unique" kinda guy. From what I heard, Not a whole lot of f100's came with the granny 4's in them. they were reserved for the 250's and so on, trucks made more for heavy hauling. I think(if everything works) that if i put the 300/6 under the hood, opened up the exaust to a throaty overtone, then I could save the hassle of having to find parts for a 360, and i'd at least be saving some gas mileage. I ain't lookin for a hotrod truck, just a restored classic. I aint so much into horsepower, as I am the throaty bottom end of torque.

Do the swap if you intend to keep the truck and use it, then pass it on to your kid. If the radiator is good, you can have a rad shop move the inlet/outlet to match those of an I6 rad. If you have a boneyard or two in your area, go picking and look for a donor truck with an I6...grab the radiator and the linkage. Or you can get a cable throttle linkage kit online for not much $$. Post some pix of your tuck...we loves eye candy. Keep the 360 to use as a road anchor, or scrap it out for project $$$.
