3.5 or 5.0. trying to decide
Thinking of replacing our explorer with F150 to get more room as family grows. I would add a bed cover or topper for luggage on vacations (hey Ford, where's the expy w/ 3.5???). Sorry, that discussion is for another fourm.
Take 2 identical supercrew, 4x4, 3.55. The only difference is the engine. My normal everyday to work and back mpg should be real close. So close it would take a long time to justify the added cost of the 3.5.
Now, add a 5000 lb boat to the back of it. The extra torque of the 3.5 will come into play. Now this is my thinking, the 3.5 will have fewer downshifts, more turbo boost = less mpg. The 5.0 will probably downshift more so you have higher rpm = less mpg. I'm wondering how much mpg difference, if any, between the 2 motors with the load.
Is this a good question? Or am I opening a thread that could go too many different ways?
We are in central Missouri. County roads are slightly hilly. The explorer pulls the boat around with no problem so the F150 would hardly know it's there.
Has anyone seen a side by side comparo of the 2 motors the way I explained above?
Thanks in advance for replys.

Kinda of subject.
I am looking at a F-150 with the ECO BOOST
My trailer is a PJ 83” x 22’ Heavy Carhauler With 6” Channel Frame, 6” Channel Tongue, 7000 lb axles, brakes, 2’ Dovetail w/ Stand Up Ramps (31” x 66”), 10K drop jack, Crossmembers on 16” Centers, Removable Treadplate Fenders
Will the Eco/f150 pull it fine safety? Then adding in a 3500lb-4200lb compact tractor and someday a Bobcat that will weigh in around 8200 Lbs.
Or DO i need the 6.7 in a F-250/F-350
This will also be a daily driver in the winter for the wife and a family travel vehicle
Sorry for the long post but i am not sure.

So you're saying that a Bobcat and the trailer will weigh around 8200 lbs? If so, a properly equipped F-150 will be just fine.

Bobcat only weighs 8200lbs...................
Well guys the wife and I made up our minds, We are prolly going to get a f-150 with an eco-boost!! the money we will save from the difference of the 6.7 diesel we will be buying more equipment(what i want) or the wife might need a new car haha well see?

When it comes time to pull 10k lbs every day for work you'll find that the 150 is capable but super duty is the truck that is ment for that purpose. Love my ecoboost and happy with my switch from 250 to 150 but remember its a half ton truck diesel superduty will do the bobcat pulling better and safer. And you need to check the weight of that trailer and gear you'll have with this machine could easily go over 150s 11000lb capacity a problem with your insurance if you crash while working

The engine is smooth, has V8 power and is very well built. We couldn't be happier.
