89 Econoline evap core removal

Anyone know how to remove the front evaporator core and A/C box from the firewall of a 1989 Econoline? I have everything removed that is removable and there is no way an 18" A/C box will come out through a 12" opening (guesstimating sizes here but you get the idea).

The inner fender well, cowl and battery tray are all integral to the body and non-removable. After fighting it yesterday for over three hours with no success, I'm about ready to apply copious amounts of oxygen mixed with acetylene. I'd start tearing apart the entire front end, fender, grill, radiator, radiator support, etc. but I don't see how that would gain me any more access.

There should be a adapter on the top of the evaporator housing, from the housing to the cowl panel. The piece that the foam seal in adhered to. Remove it, Drop the housing as low as it will go, theres two screws in the top. The core itself has to be removed. From there you have to turn just the right angle to get it out. It is with out a doubt a real bear. I assume your after the vacuum resevoir and ck. valve?

There's no adapter on top of the housing, the only place it attaches and seals to is the firewall itself with 5 stud/nuts. I have the housing unbolted from the firewall and the evap core popped out of the housing - its held into the housing with spring clips - but the housing itself prevents me from removing the core.

What little info I've been able to find and haven't confirmed yet, is that you literally have to cut the housing halves apart at the seam in order to remove it then reassemble it with glue/screws/rivets etc. after you reinstall....... oh joy. Can anyone confirm this?

I need to replace the evaporator because the compressor died a fantastic death and consequently filled it and the orifice tube in it with it's offspring. There are no vacuum controls in the evap housing, just an evaporator, blower motor and blower resistor.

Sorry having a hard time remembering back that far, getting old. I'll check tommorow and see if we still have any manuals on that model.

Thanks, I'd really appreciate it. I'm good friends with the service manager at the local Ford dealer and he was nice enough to dig through all their ancient manuals and unfortunately they don't have anything going back that far for Econoline.

If I was doing this job on commission I'd be screwed, fortunately I don't have to worry about that since it's my grandpa's van and I'm doing it for free!!

Sorry was unable to find a manual for that early of a model. They say you can register with Auto Zone and view their manuals. Whether they would go back that far or not is anyones guess. Good luck.
