Fan Cooling Circuit Failure

I have this fault code. I am thinking that since the fan is controlled mostly by the pcm...that it's either the pigtail connector...or the clutch itself. I'm looking for information on two things:

1. How to diagnose what the failed part is...the connector or the clutch itself...and

2. How to go about getting that fan off.....

This forum has been a great help to me. Need you guys to come through one more time. Thanks in advance!\

Chris

I have no clue what the actual code is....this information was given to me by a technician at the Ford dealer. I watched him pull it up on his computer but I have no idea what the code is. He explained what it was.

Okay...I'll see if I can find a way to get that code. Is there really no way to go about this without the code?

Well in theory yeah. But are you willing to do hours and hours of extra work versus getting the code?

Not that hard to get the fan off but the clutch is pretty dang expensive to just replace. The wiring usually gets cut from getting into the fan. You can inspect that yourself. It's located close to where the upper radiator goes into the engine back to the shroud itself.

+1

You can usually get the codes pulled at an autoparts store for free. Exactly what issue were you having to start with?

Would those codes happen to be P0528 and/or P0480 by any chance?

Don't have the code yet but will get it...

I have inspected the wiring harness and plug. It all seems good. No breaks or kinks. The lead that comes off the face of the clutch itself is in tact.

The fan doesn't EVER spool up. I'll see if I can get an auto parts store to pull the code tomorrow.

The proper way to test fan clutch operation on these engines is to have a scan tool on hand that can access FAN_VAR and FAN_SS and RPM data. Increase engine speed to 2500 RPMS and take active command of FAN_VAR duty cycle from 0% to 100%. Your FAN_SS speed data should increase to over 2800 RPMs within seconds. If it doesn't, the fan clutch isn't functioning as it's supposed to.

Guys I lost sleep over this last night....and decided to get up this morning and go have a second look at everything.........

The pigtail wiring harness that attaches to the fan clutch has a wire that was broken INSIDE the plastic connector housing. I gently pulled on each wire this morning and when I got to the last one...the green one...it pulled right out. No force was needed it just slipped right out. I repaired harnesses similar to these in the military so I know what they should feel like.

So NOW the question is...does that harness come off of the fan clutch. I have taken off the fan shroud and and have easy access to it but it doesn't seem to come off in a normal manner. I hope it comes off so I can just replace the pigtail....otherwise.....
