Swapping out midship/side-mount tank for rear tank

Currently, I have a midship/side-mounted 19 gallon gas tank in my 82 F150 long bed that I would like to swap out for a larger capacity 38 gallon rear mounted tank.

Has anyone ever done this before? I've looked under the truck and it looks like there is space where I could put the rear mount, but I am not sure if the chassis cross beams are far enough apart for it to fit. Is the chassis design made to take a rear mounted tank when it was built with a side-mounted tank?

I haven't been able to find anything online regarding this.

Thanks,

Jonathan

Rear mounted tanks where always a option, but they were 19 gallon. They make aftermarket tanks to fit the same location, but you will have to find a new home for your spare tire, and if you have a custom exhaust running by that area, it might interfere. You also will need to modify the bedside and do some body work to install the filler door and fill neck for the rear tank.
