This starting issue all started after that faithful morning that it died and was a bear to restart. Could that be my issue, what ever caused it to die the first time?

So heres another tid-bit.
When i start the truck the batt meter on the dash goes down below the N.
then it sits below the N for maybe 30+ sec. then hops up between the N and O and slowly works its way up to the M. It will sit there even if i give it fuel like something is still pulling off the batts.
Seems like it use to start moving up quicker than that, or as soon as i would start giving it some fuel.
This sound right?

That's the glow plugs they can run up to two mins.

You probably put a hurtin on the starter from all the cranking when it died

how cold was it when it died? i have had trucks get so low on oil that they suck the pan dry before the oil can drain back down to the sump in real cold weather. check your oil. sounds to me like the HPOP is draining back.

Fordpride I agree somewhat. But something caused it to die in the first place.
444Dieselrod oil is full and looks good, it was cold but not freezing (around 35-40 if I remember correctly.)

Well not that too many folks are chiming in.
I still have this problem. Takes at least 2 cranks to start. (use to start like a bat at he!!)
Got a new alt. and tested batts. again (good).
Today i started it quite a bit of white smoke (50* or so outside) I pulled the air filter off and noticed a fair amount of white smoke come from the valve cover port to the air intake in front of the turbo.
Does this sound like anything???
Sorry to keep bothering you guys about this i just dont want to have to pay someone if I can fix it myself.
Please Help. If i could get some the past questions answered to that would help too.

It has oil in the elec. plug? If so, it should be replaced. Unplug it and try to start it once, see how it acts. It wil cel, but that's ok.

I've tried that as well, still turns and turns before it will start.

Update: I also checked the HPOP, oil is to the top (had to check under the sensor, plug was acting like it wanted to strip out). I did however notice some oil under the HPOP.
