lightning motor

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-Nov-02 AT 03:47 PM (EST)]Has anyone swaped a lighting motor into there bronco? Can you just swap the top end end with a exsiting 351? I have a 1996 bronco with a 351. I am interested in finding a lighting motor and swaping. Could a bronco have been special ordered with this motor? This guy i offroad with says he has a 96 bronco with a lighting motor, Ihave not seen it, so I dont no for sure if it is the truth ,or if he is just full of it.

The Lightning's GT-40 351 was never a factory option in the Bronco, but I've seen a few with built-to-Lightning 351 specs in late-model Broncos. I remember about a year, maybe two ago,one of the magazines had a 1990 Eddie Bauer featured, which had it's stock 351 turned into a GT-40 351,and it also wore a supercharger on it.I forget which magazine it was, but I remember it showed a B&W picture of this Bronco smoking the rear tires!

Question lightning motor

I have a question about it though. I have an 87' bronco with a 351w lightning crate motor. It has all the GT-40 bells and whistles. The tranny was never upgraded from an AOD and I was wondering how hard it would be to do this. I was told that I would need to get new proccessor, new harness and tranny. If this was done would that be it or would I need to do more to it?

The first couple of years the lighting had the 351 with carb but then converted to the new modular engine with supercharger.

I would love to see it if you still have pictures. If you do email them to service@atascaderoford.com. I would be most grateful.

Thanks

broncomule, I don't think that the first lightnings were carbed only becuase the first lightnings of what I know of were in 1992 with the 1993 model with the 5.8MPI, I don't think it had a supercharger or not.

I'd like to see those pics! please

That mag u were talking about is 4X4 power. There no longer printing..so getting a old issue is a problem.
JBA racing did all of the work for that rig.

Any one have the back issue handy?

The lightning engine was no more than a ford sportsman engine block with some alum GT40 heads and eventually a supercharger...

the stock EFI setup will work with the GT40 heads....This is what I am running(GT40X heads)......minus the sportsman block....

I am running the siamesed R302 4 bolt main engine block on the 69 mustang and all the windsor heads etc....bolt right on as well....

I love the interchangability.....

Someone stuck on Lightning Stickers and a supercharger that wasn't available on 1st Gen Lightning and call it a Lightning Bronco!?!??! Notice it is a 96 EB. Motor Trend did a Lightning Bronco in White in 93 magazine I believe, they also did a SHO Taurus Wagon the same year I believe. Actually it was Car and Driver March 1994 issue. White Lightning Bronco it was called.

I'm sure the guy that owns that bronco knows that there was no such thing, there's no need to criticize here. all that matters is that it looks good
