Fuel Tank Lock Ring Leaking

Has anyone had trouble getting the lock ring to stay in place on the sending unit on top of the front tank. This one is leaking after replacing the pump. Any tips for trying to tighten it up on the truck besides tapping a long screwdriver with a hammer? It kinda shifts to one side doing that and I need to be able to turn it and keep it centered better.

That lock ring looks wrong, is that original? I can tell the pump is aftermarket as it lacks the proper indentation for the ring.

It is a Spectra pump. The lock ring is from the Dorman 55812 Ford/GM kit. The lock ring that came with the pump was flimsy junk. The original lock ring was deformed. I had it pretty snug but it must have vibrated loose.

I can't tell from the pic but the locking ring should lock against tabs on the tank once it is rotated far enough.. thus making the possibility of it loosening impossible.

Looks like you still could knock the ring another 3/8" or so towards lock. Do you feel the square cut o ring sealing?

As it was mentioned, you still have lots to go to lock the tank ring. It needs to be snug and tight against the tank tabs. I have even tapped the tank tabs down after securing the lock ring to ensure that it's tight.

It was farther around and doesn't seem to stay in place. I can't get it to rotate any farther from under the truck tapping on a screwdriver. Should have thought about tapping the tabs down. I've worked on these a few times over the years and never had one not stay secured.

Well, It was a bit of a trick with the tank in the truck, but I was able to get the lock ring rotated into the locked position. I'm almost positive that's where it was before. We did have the tank down a couple times to replace the pump and then deal with a wonky sending unit. Maybe the last time I didn't get it completely back in place. Hoping it stays.
