Excursion V10 2WD Transmission Problem
Y'ello all,
I have a 2000 V10 2WD Excursion with 104,000 miles. Last week it started shifting hard between first and second, but only when I am between 1500-2k RPMs. If I rev the engine higher, it shifts smooth. I checked the fluid and it is fine. I rarely tow anything except my little trailer to the dump every few months. I have a few questions:
1. Should I drop the pan and change the tranny filter?
2. Should/Can I check the rear diff fluid? (haven't noticed any leaks)
3. Why are peaches fuzzy?
4. Could an inline flush and fill help?
5. I saw a post about a speed sensor in the rear diff. Could this be the issue?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Homie

Here's what I found for #3...
Why Are Peaches Fuzzy?
Although the reason for peaches having a fuzzy skin is not definitely known, it is thought that it is so they can effectively protect themselves against threats like insects and certain diseases. The fuzz on their outer skin is also thought to prevent dehydration and “sunburn”, which can occur even in peaches.
While the reason for their fuzzy skin may not be altogether known, this is the closest conclusion that has been gathered.
Over time, animals, humans, and even plants develop evolutionary defense mechanisms which are meant to help them survive against disease as well as other predators (in this case different types of insects).

I would start by having codes pulled to see if you could pin point the actual problem.
1. Should I drop the pan and change the tranny filter?
-You really shouldn't need to, but if you do, use only Motorcraft (Ford stuff)
2. Should/Can I check the rear diff fluid? (haven't noticed any leaks)
-Yes, you can do so by pulling the sensor that may be causing the problem to begin with known as the VSS or Vehicle Speed Sensor. When it gets covered in shavings, it sometimes receives an inaccurate signal which throws things off. Sometimes simply wiping off the sensor fixes this problem. You can check the fluid by pulling the VSS and dipping a long screwdriver down the hole. If it's milky and/or doesn't look or smell too good, it would be a good time to pull the cover, clean things up, replace it. Welcome to guzzle's Rear Differential Maintenance Web Page
3. Why are peaches fuzzy?
-In addition to what LivingLarge said: "Because God made them that way "
4. Could an inline flush and fill help?
-It never does hurt, especially if you can't remember the last time it was done. I recently did mine and it was so ridiculously easy to do, I will NEVER pay the dealer or anyone to do it again.

I had the same question/symptoms and the trans guru around here replied it was likely a sticking 1-2 accumlator valve.
Tranny flush and diff service had no effect on mine. Shamefully I must say I still haven't fixed mine yet but it's high priority once it comes out of storage. (SOON!!! YAY!)
