I am trying to make the decision on a new Ecoboost, 4x4, with the 157 wheelbase, 6.5 ft bed, crew cab. I like the FX4 but am worried about the 3.73 gearing for mpg. I will rarely use the 4wd but want to have it regardless. I don't plan on towing very often just want a good all around truck with best mpg possible. I am downsizing from my 2008 F350, SRW, 6.4 diesel. Thanks! These long beds (6.5 ft) are very hard to find!

 

Do all 2012 FX4 Ecoboost trucks come with the 3.73 rear end? All of the ones that I have looked at so far do but I didn't know if it was standard on that model.

 

3.73 is standard in all fx4's. I have 3.73's in mine and get pretty good mpg but IMO would be better if I had 3.55's. I too downgraded from a f350 srw

In the FX4, 3.73 is standard and the 4.10 is optional. If you want a truck equally equipped to an FX4 but with numerically lower gears, you can find what you want in a Lariat.

 

I also went back and forth on which gear ratio to get. Two things sealed the decision: liking the FX4 (style & off road features) and my typical driving (commute with lots of stop lights & 50-55 mph speed limits most of the way).

From what people have been reporting online it seemed like in my typical drive the highway benefits of 3.31 or 3.55 gears wouldn't really make much difference. Also I test drove the truck I bought, which confirmed this thought.

Once the gear ratio was relegated to secondary, the other features made the decision. From limited time at highway speeds it looks like it will get 18-20 mpg highway, and commuting it will be 15-17 mpg (depending on traffic and lights). Stop and go around town looks like 12-14 mpg. But less than 700 miles on it so far, so still breaking it in.
