Can anyone give me some honest feedback about having a tune written with the turbo brake? I can't seem to find definitive results anywhere. Some people say it is a great option to have while others worry about giant EBP readings, floating exhaust valves and unsurprisingly blowing HG's.

From my perspective, I think it would be less engine wear than using the stock tow/haul braking because the engine is constantly trying to compress air to slow down versus just shifting down and revving to 3500 RPM. I also can't imagine that compressing 20 PSI of boost is worse than normal compression with the boost/fuel mixture but what do I know?

I've wondered how that works, are they just closing the vanes?

Yes, from what I understand, the turbo just closes the vanes and builds boost to slow the truck down. I just have a hard time believing that can cause problems from too much compression.

the Tow Haul mode uses the turbo as an exhaust brake... use it all the time when im in hill country or have a big load in the bed..

Tow/haul is locking the convertor and holding a lower gear.

I agree, stock doesn't use turbo. If you watch stock VGT, it drops to around 30 when slowing with tow haul. When the turbo is used, vgt goes up to 85% and builds upwards of 20 boost.

uses the converter too... but also uses the turbo as an exhaust brake.. That's why ford DOES NOT recommend putting an exhaust brake on the diesels with the VGT on them. It closes the vanes to increase the back pressure in the cylinders.

As per Mark K:

On the 6.0L with the five speed TorqShift automatic the Tow/Haul mode:

First, it makes he upshifts at a higher speed. This prevents lugging.

Second, it provides engine braking by automatically downshifting the transmission when you are slowing. It also can downsift at a higher speed if you are on the brakes. It's real effective at maintaining speed down a grade.

It does not prevent shifts to overdrive.

Tow/Haul has nothing to do with the turbo

The turbo does not act as a brake on stock tuning. On stock tuning, the turbo opens the vanes and builds almost no boost or back pressure when decelerating. If you watch VGT while slowing down in tow/haul you will see that the VGT actually drops when slowing down on stock tuning in tow/haul. Tow tunes with the turbo brake written into them use the turbo as a brake by closing the vanes which in turn spins the turbine faster to build boost in the cylinders while only allowing a small amount of exhaust to exit the downpipe.

all i can tell you is what ive had FORD and Powerstroke Performance guys both tell me.. The ford guys i talked to claimed to be the ones who actually designed the 6.0 and how it worked. But seemed like everyone here holds the Powerstroke Performance guys as the all time Gurus as the go to guys for the Powerstroke engines knowlege. If i go off that reputation they seem to have here id have to believe they were telling me the truth... But if yall are saying they are also wrong i dont know what to tell you then.. I was asking about adding exhaust brakes onto the 6.0's system and that was the reason/explanation they gave me.
