If you're looking at Gen 1's the closer you stay to the 2005 model the better. All of them are 4.0L SOHC V-6's, most are 5R55E automatics.
If you're looking at Gen 2's then they were offered with the 4.6L SOHC V-8 as well as the 4.0L SOHC V-6. Opinion is that the V-8 gets at least as good MPG's as the V-6.

Be safe there brother!
Your intended purpose will also dictate which "Generation" is best suited. The Gen 1's have a "normal" 8.8' rear end and torsion bar front end. They off-road more easily. The Gen 2's are IRS and suspension mods are difficult.
