'96 e150 outer rear axle seal replacement question
#2
I am sure you figured this out, but here goes.
Your rear axle should be a ford 8.8 inch 31 spline rear axle. This is great, it was used on the crown vic, mustang, f150, explorer, bronco, etc. Parts are cheap and plentiful, and you can even get limited slips and lockers for it (I have an electronic locker in mine!) The downside is, its a not a floating axle assembly. To remove the axles, you will have to open the diff, remove the crosspin, and pull the c clips. Full standard teardown needed on the wheel side too. Tire off, drum off, brakes out, wheel cylinder off, and remove the backing plate. When you pull the axle itself out, keep an eye on your diff's bearings, as they may make a break for it if your shims or bearings are worn.
I can do both sides in about 1 1/2 hours if I have it on my lift with my air tools ready to rock.
