Unhappy Firewall/carpet question

I was attempting to pull up my carpeting yesterday, but hit a snag at the firewall on both sides. There seems to be some type of stud head on each side that holds down the carpeting and the firewall cover. How to I get the cover & carpet off of that?

I find it hard to believe that nobody on this board knows how to remove the interior firewall cover from a slick? I've found a very nice used one in a salvage yard, but I don't want to tear in loose from those studs and I could realy use some advice here.

There's a few items that need to be removed. Electrical connection drivers side. Both plubs need to be unscrewed from firewall. Heater core and unit needs to be removed. There are plastic push (bolts?) that need to come out. Anything secured to firewall from the inside will need to be removed. Not sure what else might be in the way.
If you can see the plasic (bolts?) from the engine bay, you can probably tap them out, other-wise a pain in the backside to get out.

On my 64 firewall; the plugs are metal and I used needle nose pliers after as Gangstakr mention; remove asscessories ie heater box, etc; I lightly squeeze the nail portion of the plugs and push them thru the fire wall.
