Oil Change Brand New 6.7 and break in
Waitin on my new 6.7 to be delivered. Am a big fan of Mobil 1 5w40 Turbo Diesel. Contemplating swappin out the oil right off the bat so I can have the good stuff from day one. Am i nuts? Any reason not to? Not sure about break in oil requirments and such. I know on aircraft engines break in is critical and only mineral oil can be used then after 25 hours switched to ashless dispersant. Not sure if modern automobile engines are as picky. I have been researching the break in procedures and opinions associated with the topic. I have a pretty good idea of how critical it is regardless of how unimportant the OM makes it seem. As always any info much appreciated.

My first oil change was at 4,700.
Wait until 5,000 is my opinion.
Anything before that is simply a waste.
However, it's your truck and you can do what you want.
The most important thing is, get out and drive that thing and have fun!
The smile won't leave your face as you vary your speed for the first 500 miles to get the truck ready to tow.

Not sure if the 6.7 uses special break-in oil or not from the factory, but a lot of engines do. Oil with a higher friction content is actually helpful during break-in as it allows the piston rings to properly seat with the cylinder walls. Considering how much you are spending on this engine, it would be wise to follow the break-in schedule exactly and don't change the oil until the computer tells you to. The oil that Ford puts in the engine is meant to be in the engine, especially during break-in!
If you'd like to learn more about the importance of diesel break-in, here's a link to a very good and well-known article in the diesel community. It's a good read.

I plan to use M1 as well, but not until the first oil change.

Carl, thanks for the reply. I am very familiar with the article in addition to typical engine break in requirements and needs. I think id have to agree with you that I will run the engine with the factory oil until the first change. As far as waiting for the computer to tell me it needs changing, I will most likely go that route, but part of me just questions the computers ability to "really know" when the oil needs changing. I know modern technology is there and all, but I have such a hard time accepting it as I come from an aviation backround where many things like piston engins are mostly ancient technology because thats what works and has been proven for so many years.

Here are a few oil related topics for when you're bored.
May or may not be of any help.
I remember a number of oil discussions and when to change but can't find all the threads.
