6.0L Excessive smoke, Intermittent

I got a 6.0L engine and one day its running good and then the next day it's excessivly smoking light blue out the tail pipe and continues to do this cycle. The Exhaust has a strong odor as well. Given the light blue smoke, I 've been monitoring the engine oil and it appears NOT to be using any. Then I thought it was bad fuel and I ran alot of conditioner through it over the past serveral months. It would clear up, then start smoking, then clear up then start smoking again.

Is there something out there that would cause this truck to start smoking intermittently like this? Possible sensor or valve?? There are no fault lights on and the truck has decent power.

You need to check for codes. Just because you're not getting any lights doesn't mean you're not getting codes. That's the first step as this might let you know what the real problem is.

There are no codes, I do have a scan tool and checked that right off the hop. How do you check that downpipe at the turbo?? Is that a hard job?? Im not sure what exactly you are talking about. Injectors were all just checked a couple of months back at the dealer, cause I thought for sure it was the good ole 6.0L injector problem, they all checked out ok.

have u done the blue spring update? u should to avoid killing injectors. change fuel filters and check for water and use only OEM. when since the last change. to take of the downpipe, there is a clamp connecting the pipe to the bakc of the turbo and lift that pipe up and check for oil in there. that would mean a bad turbo. being that its blueish, i would lean toward fuel problem. u said ur not losing any oil. keep us posted.

What's the blue spring update? I don't think so? What does that entail? No I m pretty sure it is not using oil. Oil was just changed a 150hrs ago, Fuel filters might have 600-700 hrs on them. I use NAPA Gold Filters.

EGR valve is easier to check (not more likely the problem though). Most guys won't use anything other than Motorcraft filters dour to concerns about the dimensions of the aftermarket parts. Here is a thread of my blue spring installation. Pretty easy and quick to do:

Thanks, that is a very nice post! Haha you sound like the guy at the service desk at my local dealer!! They must train you guys to say the same stuff..lol jk

Do you think this spring update will stop the random smoking? Was this spring a change up? You think the dealer would have made that change for me when I took it in for the smoking porblem.

What does the filter got to do with it? The Napa Gold filter is a better filter as far as im concerned.

If you read around the site a little bit you will come to find out that a motorcraft filter with OEM cap is very important. They are not just trained to say that, they are saying that to help you out.

Well I kept all the OEM caps form all 4 of our 6.0L when I switched to NAPA, I will make the change and see if it helps. The only thing is, all the other trucks are fine.......

You're wrong. The NAPA filter is a different size than OEM and even has a taller cap. Causes issues with the oil pressure I believe. Somebody on here could explain it a lot better than I can.

There are a couple other filter brands you can use (Racor and one other I believe) but you want to have that OEM cap.
