Towing w/ E4OD question

Hey guys, I got a 93 7.3idi with an E4OD trans and I wondering how much weight can I pull on the highway (uphill) before turning off the od? I am a landscaper and pull loads of 3-6000lbs consistently and I just want to make sure I am doing the right things here!

Thanks!

I think the most damage when towing in od is the constant shifting in and out. If you are cruising a constant speed fast enough for it to stay in OD on flat or downhill I'd leave it in OD, then switch it out when you are in the hills and in traffic.

im at his combined gross weight all the time.
it doesn't take much of an aux cooler.these E40D's run much differently than the C6.

oh well,true i suppose.i wouldn't go any smaller than this one.B&M #70268 (7 1/2 in. x 11 in. x 3/4 in.) it's just that its not like a 6.0h no cooler or anything.

That's the same size I put last summer on the motorhome......and the tranny blows it's vacuum modulator and dies at the end of the season

Should of left it without an Aux. cooler like it's always been

I'd love to get the huge 6.0L cooler for it though, like the bigger Class A gas motorhomes have, but I don't think I can fit one infront of the van.

Good luck towing with that E4OD, your gonna need it, I'd invest in a trans temp gauge if I were you.

I agree, a tranny cooler is helpful and try to avoid constant up and down shifting. Don't worry, you're not near the limit of the transmission.

Trans temp gauge is nice if you want to go that route. It's on my list of wants.

What are the chances that the truck Scaper just got has been tuned within the last 1000 miles and is "working correctly"??

My truck was a relatively low mileage(80K) E4OD that worked perfectly fine empty. You could only tell it acted weak when it was loaded up with 16-18KGCVW.

You should inform everyone that you have a shift kit and cooler and gauge before telling them their trans will be fine, I didn't have those things and my trans wasn't fine. Just saying.

I towed a 24ft. enclosed trailer with my 67 mustang and had no issues.I used either of my 1st Gen Lightnings but was careful about not allowing the trans to shift in and out too much.
