Oil change question

I saw someone had motor trouble on here and posted changing his oil from 5w-30 to 10w-30 and was questioned to why he changed his oil. My question is why does it matter what oil you run? I have always run 10w-30 oil never anything else and as seeing this is a new truck to me and i have to do the oil pan and all that im just wondering if there is a good reason to run 5w 30 over the 10 w 30?

theres not alot of difference.. the 5W-30 is slightly less thick.. so in cold areas during the winter time people sometimes puts 5w in to help with cold starts and 10w in the summer...

not enough of a difference to really matter..

I thought that as well and always felt the 10w 30 was thicker and better for my motors but after seeing people say they shouldnt run anything but 5w 30 i couldnt understand it.

Yes, there is a difference. If you're interested in learning about oil, I'd suggest giving this a read, then hitting the BITOG forums: Motor Oil 101 - Bob is the Oil Guy

BITOG = Bob Is The Oil Guy. Click the "oil forums" tab at the top of the link that I posted to access them.
