Portland DEQ requirements? (83 F250 460)

I have my 83 F250, 460. It's GVRW is 8600. It has no Cat.

In Oregon they say that any car 1975 and newer has to go through DEQ (in the areas where DEQ is done).

But I've heard from people who have similar trucks in Portland, that they don't have to go through DEQ because of the GVRW. Although the stipulation on the website is Diesel engines.

Does anyone know whats the deal?

The weight exemption is for diesel vehicles only. All gas vehicles newer than '75 must be tested:

Oregon DEQ: Air Quality Vehicle Inspection - What's tested?

Do you know if it had a cat to begin with? I think the cutoff was 8,500 lbs so I don't think it had a cat on it from the factory. My parents 3/4 ton van from that era didn't. If it didn't, you don't have to have one.

Wish I could help ya, but I only know the diesel info...

Plus I wouldn't live in Portland if they PAID me to.

It's a non cat engine, from the factory.

And yeah, thats what i thought too (about Diesels), but the guy I talked to (who has an 86 or 88) said his was exempt because of it's weight.

I'd say just to be safe call in and talk to someone who can tell you whether the GVWR has any effect on gas trucks.

I'd call and ask. As far as I know it is required to be tested if it is living within the Metro test area.
I had a 78 with a 400 and an 87 with a 460, neither of them had cats from the factory.

I may be wrong, but a HD rig of that GWVR that came from the mfg without smog, is exempt.

That's what I was thinking from "back in the day". But looking at the current Registration/DEQ Regs it looks like they may have deleted that exemption. Looks like the farm license exemption isn't there now either - although that doesn't make too much sense to me. However, Portland and Medford are in a world of their own.
