"limp home" ???
It applies to several systems differently. The engine computer can switch to that mode if one or several of the sensors go out of range and it can't really tell what's happening any more. For the transmission, I think it happens if the shift solenoids stop responding or are disconnected/burnt out. It means the transmission changes to a mode of operation that is less than normal, but theoretically sufficient to keep the vehicle moving under most circumstances - just what the name implies.

Hi Steve, I just got my 6.4 2008 Ranch King. I have just had the transmission flushed and I have seen a small leak, I had to tow a horse trailer and while going over some hills the Limp home light came on and said something like limited gears engine power down. I got to where I was going and let it sit for a few hours it started up again but it clearly did not have much power. I got some more trany fluid I made it home. I am going to go get the codes read. Dealership not open this morning. but I will take it to Auto Zone. Can it be the Trany that put it in limp mode or do you think it is a sensor. It will drive and slowly get up to 60 with a flat tow.
