To clone or not to clone?

A friend of mine that lives up in Canada has the parts needed to turn my 66 Ford F100 into a Mercury M100. He sent me the fender badges as a congratulatory gift on my wedding. When I was originally looking for a slick, I wanted to get a Merc and contacted him about the one he had for sale. Unfortunately is was out of my budget but through our conversations we became friends. I eventually bought the truck I have now and I love it. He contacted me a couple weeks ago to tell me he had all the parts I need to make mine into a Merc clone. I'm not a purist but thought I would see what you guys think. Here are a couple pics of my truck and his.

I too am a near purist, but I have to say I would be tempted but the possibility of having a truck with all the Mercury markings. If the price was right I would probably do it. I love having something unique, and Mercury trucks in Colorado at least are rare!!

Outside of photos, or shows, I don't think I have ever seen more than a couple Merk slicks in real time in 60+ years.

Owning one could be appealing.

I am in Kansas and i don't think i have ever seen one of these either. If you are upfront and honest about it being a clone / tribute ( the new buzz word) i don't think there is anything wrong with it. With the fewer numbers of "rare" models of the cars / trucks and the stupid prices they are bringing this allows people to get the looks without the empty wallet.

Hey if you really want to get done to the nitty gritty you'd have to run bias a ply tires, maybe on split rims, single weight oil, leaded gas.... etc.etc It's your truck, represent it as it is a "tribute" , "clone" whatever. Look at half of the Shelby Cobra's and Shelby mustangs out there they are clones and still look cool, so...
I grew up north of Detriot and remember the first time I saw a Merc truck, dad had a heck of a time explaining that to me since I was 7 or 8 at the time and insisted it was a Ford LOL

There used to be one that was used as a service truck at a local church. I drove by a few years back and it was gone. I really wish I'd seen it for sale because I would have bought it

Go for it. It is your truck. Do what you want. But, be sure to start a build thread for your clone Mercury since we all love truck ****.

Will do, but it will be a while. Have a few other "projects" that are higher up on the priority list.

I see it as a clone to an extent. Just adding those original pieces to the truck would increase the value due to the rarity of the parts. It is not like the parts are remanned or fiberglass, they are authentic. The only difference would be the vin tag and titles.

Do it man...would be such a cool truck. Who gives a crap what anyone thinks...almost none of these trucks are un-molested.
Is he sending you the tailgate too? The letters are raised on it. Does the valance for the front lettering have additional posts
to mount the letters?

Post pics when you're done....

All the Mercs were Canadian trucks weren't they? I spent my childhood in Canada and used to see them all the time...most are
dust now 'cause of the frappin' salt they used to put on the roads.

My buddy in Canada has a tailgate for me but I don't think he has the valance with the MERCURY script. They are the same as a FORD one but have 3 extra tabs spot welded in for the extra letters. Also the way they mount to the radiator support is a bit different I think. If anyone with a 66 Merc can post a pic of this panel with their hood up, that would be helpful
